Recently, one of our group was looking for his next painting project. As a group we all have lots of Napoleonic's, so he was looking at 28mm Saxons. There are a number of manufacture's that produce Saxon's, mostly infantry, artillery and heavy cavalry. Westfalia – Infantry, artillery and support Calpe – Infantry Elite – infantry Eureka – Heavy cavalry (I may have missed some here?) However it seems that there is a problem finding light cavalry. Connoisseur has them, but these are older sculpts that may not work well with newer ones. Our group member nixed the idea of Saxons because he could not get the light cavalry in a newer sculpt. So I wondered what the consensus was among TMP'ers? 1. I will only purchase when I can get all the figures I need for an army 2. I will get what I can, and wait (hopefully) for someone to produce what I cannot get. 3. I will use whatever I can get to complete the army. Even if the sculpts look quit different. EG: Minifig and Front Rank. Myself I have a rather massive Prussian Calpe army, however to get Cuirassiers', I had to go with Foundry. No big deal. |

The last AWI game I put on had 12 different manufacturers, and it was a small game. A good proportion of them were Hinchliffe figures from the 80s. As Mary Renault would call them, those "terrible old men" can still kick ass. |

I guess that makes me a "3". |

3. with some attitude. There are just some figures I will not use. |

No, I will substitute the wrong figure in a heartbeat. But if the right one comes along I will then replace the wrong one. |

I mix in any old junk as long as they are roughly the right size, and convert figures if needed to produce specialists or specific types. Is that a 4? |

Sort of 3. Most of my 25mm figures are from the 70s and I am quite happy to convert. |

More towards 3. My ACW armies contain 25s to 28s because that is what I have purchased over the years. |

1 In the Golden Age of miniatures, I buy only matched entire armies at one time, from one range. I did options 2 and 3 when I was younger. I just don't have to do it any more. |

#2… I will mix and match from certain manufacturers, but after that, I'm either content to wait, or shape my battles to fit what I have. |

2 plus a bit of converting. As Jamesonsafari mentions live is too short to paint rubbish figures but I think it's worth converting figures that are basically good. |

Btw, ate the ad axon light cavalry so unique that you could not use another nationality? I have found Napoleonic light cavalry to be rather copycat, particularly light dragoons, where everybody copied the French. Are there any "close enough" matches, where the only differences are saddle blanket? |

3. But usually I have to at least like the figures. I have pretty broad tastes, but occasionally I will find something I just won't buy. |

Winston – good point. We'll have to look at that. |

….ate the ad axon…. is of course a translation by Autocorrect for "are the Saxon…. |

At least it wasn't 'ate the odd Saxon.' Winston. Pretty much a 3 on the OP. |

I am not any kind of snob, I think … but I do go to considerable effort and expense to get all the right stuff and all the way I like it … (convert, make it myself, commission etc.) .. Same time, I have never knowingly dampened anyone's enthusiasm for a project on the basis of figure availability (usually I will offer to make them the bits they are missing if that will help open a door for them) … Likewise I always enjoy access to other people's collections irrespective as to whether their aesthetic matches mine (I might not mix certain brands but I'm happy with the illusions if other people go with them – they can do their collections their way ) … That must be a 5? ( … these are trivial obstacles that can easily be overcome) Phil |

3 and I will play periods I don't have figures for, if close enough. Recently played 1879 Chile vs Peru and Bolivia using 1870 french, 1866 Austrians and confederates. |
Mserafin | 22 Dec 2015 8:43 p.m. PST |
Definitely a 2. At the rate I paint, I rest assured that someone will make Saxon latrine attendants before I can even finish a decent lot of line infantry. |

I really have a dislike of resin miniatures… always prefer the miniature to be metal! I don't mind resin terrain pieces however… |

No snobbery figure here – find a figure that works and put it to good use. I am with Yesthatphil's attitude. If I do have any snobbery it would be in favor of resin over MDF – I just don't trust the long term durability of MDF plus most of it is but* ugly with those burn marks showing, getting better but just not for me, yet. |

Option 4- find a figure suitable for conversion and convert what I need, but I do try and get all the figures to fit size wise. |
