You buy a new game, one intended to be played in a specific game setting (even if it includes provisions for playing elsewhere).

Do you prefer the fluff to be:

A: In front, before the rules.

B: In the back, after the rules.

C: Interspersed with the rules, maybe in alternating chapters.

D: I didn't read the question, so I am going to insist on not having fluff in game rules.

Front or back, not interspersed, please.

E. On sidebars every other right hand page. If the game needs more than that for it's fluff, it isn't customizeable enough for me. The first Dark Eldar Codex got it right, enough hints and teasers to give some flavor, but not nearly so much that you couldn't draw your own conclusions.

I hate calling it fluff.

Martin Rapier19 Dec 2015 1:05 a.m. PST

D. I hate fluff, apart from the fluff I like (maps, OBs).

MajorB19 Dec 2015 2:30 a.m. PST

I really don't care at all where the fluff is or even if there is any or not.

MHoxie19 Dec 2015 3:26 a.m. PST

I prefer C. Sidebar fluff is good, too.

warwell19 Dec 2015 3:45 a.m. PST

D but B is fluff must be there

Front, back, or sidebar is fine. Just not intermixed throughout the actual rules mechanics, SO A,B, or E.

abelp0119 Dec 2015 7:57 a.m. PST

A or B

zippyfusenet19 Dec 2015 8:10 a.m. PST

Minimal fluff, please. I want to buy wargame rules, not fanfic or the Classics Comics history of the War of the Slobbovian Succession – thank gawd there's Osprey for that.

Design notes are not fluff. Put those in.

I don't understand your first sentence, apart from the first four words! I get the feeling this is maybe referring to Sci-fi/fantasy type stuff?

If I buy a set of Napoleonic rules, is the "specific game setting" the Napoleonic Wars?

Anyway. I'm with Zippy. A set of rules, some examples of play and some design notes and I'm all set….

Weasel19 Dec 2015 11:14 a.m. PST

Sorry! It was aimed more at fantasy/scifi gaming, though for a historical game, if they include a few pages of historical background or a crash course in funny hat wearing, that'd be fluff too.

Cerdic19 Dec 2015 1:22 p.m. PST

Aha. No worries!

Still a minimal fluff man….

Dasher02 May 2016 3:30 p.m. PST

If it is actually reflected in tne rules by special conditions, then it's fine.

Otherwise, if it is just fluff and nothing more, I prefer that it not even be in the same volume.
