(Thought I had submitted this, but it seems to have vanished).

Generic rules, defined as a game system that can be used for a wide range of potential gaming periods, whether covering an entire technological spectrum (pre-gunpowder, horse&musket, 20th century) or even attempting to cover all warfare ever.

It could also be applied to systems that are adapted to multiple, disparate periods IF the system stays relatively unchanged between periods.

What is your stance?

A: I prefer to learn a single game, even if it won't always be a perfect fit.

B: I prefer a game written specifically for each period

C: I'm good with generic games for similar periods but keep my funny hats and brown mud separate!

D: I run all my gaming with half a copy of Tractics and a D&D Monster Manual.

A. I use Volley and Bayonet and Command Decision for 80% of my gaming.

C. Though I find there are some systems that are adaptable to many periods

I have used The Sword and the Flame for everything from French and Indian War to the Boxer Rebellion.

Funnily enough, I'm C with wargames rules. I don't mind generic systems. However, for RPGs I like bespoke rules for each genre; I'm not with the "D20 for everything" crowd.

Uber – I gotcha, though for me, it tends to be opposite. Discrete (ish) mini's rules but I love me some GURPS and BRP when I'm RPing.

I am surprised no one mentioned the "has been modded for almost everything" TS&TF rules.

While not a fan, the strength (to some)/weakness (to me) of said rules fits pretty much A.
