Dreamblade Repainted

Hundvig Fezian is not a real big fan of pre-painted minis, and he positively despises randomly-packed "collectable" ones - so why is he writing this article?

Please bear with me as I have never made a Poll Suggestion before.

Quite frankly I'm surprised this hasn't come up yet.

1 – Best Star Wars movie EVER. Will see it again and again and again…

2 – A welcome addition to the Star Wars saga. I will see it again.

3 – I liked it and would recommend it all Star Wars fans. I may see it again.

4 – It was OK, but only for die hard Star Wars fans, otherwise wait to rent it.

5 – Waste of time and money. Wait to rent it or better yet wait till someone else rents it.

6 – Don't bother. Just walk away.

7 – I stormed out halfway through the movie and demanded my money back!

8 – WFT! Let's string JJ up before he ruins some other film franchise.

2. It some ways, I felt it superior to even the original (pacing) but that magic will never be recaptured.

1.5 May be in the running for best SW movie, but that will take time to digest. Will see it again and again and again like it's 1977.

Sitting in theater, waiting to see it for second time today.

4 A Very unoriginal plot and storyline, but well done.

A solid 2 – plot was too derivative of the original trilogy to merit a 1, but a very worthy successor to them, with some excellent performances, especially from Daisy Ridley and the chap who played Kylo Ren.

Frankly, I think you're a little early on this!

However, my youngest son, who wasn't even born till 1980 is taking me to see the movie on Christmas Day. I saw the original "Star Wars" Premier on opening day in San Francisco, while I was going to "C" School in Mare Island.

My 3 sons and I have enjoyed many hours in Drive-Ins, Theaters, and at home watching every film in the Star Wars Saga. All I can say is I look forward to seeing this latest chapter in the saga, and learning something new from both the movie and my son!!! May the Force be with you all, always!

The pacing was uneven. JJ has a light touch with the material though. And he didn't over-use any of the characters or locations. It hit some strong nostalgic moments but over all did not have much substance. Definitely for Star Wars fans. I'm not sure it will hold up for non-fans.

I have no problem giving it a 2 or even a 1. It has a nice balance of being understood by an audience completely new to the mythos while also being faithful to the original. Add the right amount of humor,
character development and fan service and I think this will keep people coming back for more. And since Disney plans on cranking out a Stae Wars movie a year as long as there's an audience…

A good 2.

kallman18 Dec 2015 10:02 p.m. PST

A good solid 2 but I will push it to 1. This film had heart even if there was a lot of retread. Looking forward to the next movie.

2.

Maybe R2.

First 45min or so was pretty fantastic. The rest was good even if not entirely great.

But the story line was too familiar.

I'm not comfortable rating it yet, as I'll rate the trilogy once it's done. Yeah, it has to stand on its own merits as a film, but it's Star Wars and its a three part story cycle.

I have seen it three times now, and as an OT tragic, it not only clears the foul prequel taste from my mouth but I absolutely am loving the new characters and am eagerly awaiting the next film.

I really liked how the First Order troops all have a brown undies moment whenever a group of X wings show up. Just came back from a screening with my wife and the audience was cheering like crazy when Poe Dameron showed up in the second act.

2 – very good movie

skipper John19 Dec 2015 7:19 a.m. PST

I'm a 6 and would have been an 8 if moving upward on the count had meant giving a worse rating. I was ready to leave half way through!

It was a remake of the first one! Except the Princes looked like my Grandma!!

There were too many scenes that were an "homage" to the first trilogy, so there was an unfortunate sense of "seen this before" periodically, plus the overall conflict was very derivative of the early movies (I won't spoil it but it is obvious). Very good otherwise, and certainly better than any of the three prequels and maybe even better than Return of the Jedi. I wonder whether the problem wasn't too great a need to reboot and reset the storyline and characters, which kept them from being as original as they could have been.

After Katrina, a guy at work asked me if I thought they would rebuild New Orleans. I said yes, but thought it would turn out to be a plastic imitation of the original. Sort of like something Disney would put up.

SWFA is not really a bad movie, but I had been hoping for much more. It was quintessential JJ Abrams. As with Star Trek, he daisy picks elements of old canon he wants, ignores other parts, mixes in some sass and some snark and makes it his own. You get a polyester reboot.

FA was essentially an outline rehash of ANH, which really is not a bad thing. The last 3 should be echoes of the original 3. I think FA would have been stronger if they had recycled more music from the original 3.

FA was uneven, a bit synthetic, implausible, periodically incomprehensible and in one aspect just plain offensive. Where did the black guy used to work on the planet killer? Really!?! Newly minted force users are doing things in 2 days that it took Luke 2 years to master.

It would have been interesting to have seen this material in other hands. Dr. Who's Moffatt or Kevin Smith might have churned out a much better flick. JJ is capable of making a good flick. I still think Armageddon is underrated.

FA will make a shot ton of money. JJA may not have it in him to make an exceptional Star Wars sub-franchise, but FA will prove his truest skill,…at making money.

So, a modified 4, non fans will like it. Die hards will see it, but in their heart of hearts they will come away longing for that lightning in a bottle once again.

Pinder, I haven't seen the film and so must reserve judgement, but that is about the most thought-provoking analysis I've seen. Thank you for taking the time to post it.

Saw the original many times in 1977. For my tastes, J.j. really got it right. This is the Journey of the Hero With A Thousand Faces. It should seem so much like the original, yet different. Same heroes' journeys, next generation.

If this did not seem like The Hero's Jouney, it would have been completely wrong.

Toaster19 Dec 2015 12:46 p.m. PST

Yep Pinder nailed it, to derivative, to much action without enough connecting plot and lots of dues ex machina moments. It would have been nice to have some hints as to how the First Order had grabbed the Empires leftovers without bringing the Republic down on it. Why did an undercover guerrilla Resistance have to be formed to fight the very thing that the Republic (presumably the successful Rebellion) had been created to stand against, it felt more like a reboot then a continuation.

That said the action scenes were good and I'll probably see it again when I can get to a 3d cinema just to properly appreciate them.

As far as the poll, 2, and given time I may say 1.

I am assuming the change in how force is used is *not* bad writing as KPinder thinks and instead is due to the "awakening in the force" which is observed by two of the force adepts and also the movie title. The force is felt by more people and it is more intuitive to use. There is a greater need than ever for teachers who can guide the young force users away from their dark sides.

Of course the earliest we will know if I am right is the next movie.
