OK, so I was filling out the forms to renew my security clearance the other day. I've always marked "Red or Auburn, "though my hair is turning gray. This time, though, they had a category "Gray or graying," and I reluctantly went with that.

Which brings me to the question: how do you paint graying hair? One sees people whose hair and beard is partially dark, and partially gray. I'd like to try it on my Vikings, so I'm particularly interested in graying hair on folks with light colored hair to begin with.

Not part of the question, really, but at the end of the drop down list of hair colors to choose from were:
Blue
Green
Orange
Pink
Purple
Leaves me shaking my head. None of my Vikings will get hair these in colors.

I usually paint the regular color, then dry brush with gray

I am just the opposite of Rich and Skeets. My suggestion is to look at people with grey hair. Paint what you see. Grey hair is more prevalent closer to the scalp, the original color more prevalent further out. So I start with a nice light grey base, and then add selective highlights of the original color.

Tke it from a grey head the older you get the less "regular" colour is left being replaced by lighter and lighter grey then eventually white
So I paint my Greybeards… and heads a basic grey then use a dark wash to bring out the shadows

With grey paint.

My "regular color" is long gone. I think it was dark brown but I don't remember.

I look in the mirror and try to copy what I see!

I hide my grey hair by giving myself a Number 0 cut every two weeks. There are not enough bald wargame figures!

For miniatures I usually paint black or dark brown and dry brush grey as above.

I don't call my hair's color "gray", I call it "platinum"… ;-)

Three color highlight;
Dark grey
Medium grey
then white (light) grey

Dry brush white in places for greying and all over for grey. That's how it works in nature its the white hairs that cause the effect.
