Hi Folks,

Trying to find out the uniform worn by this Regt. I know it was made up of French deserters POWs and Swiss and served under Wellington during the Peninsular campaign. I also know the flag but my question is what uniform did they wear? Was it the standard British Red jacket style. If so what were the collar, cuffs and turnbuckle colours.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Cheers,

this regiment is shown in the osprey books on émigré regiments and also in the haythornwaithe book on the French revolutionary uniforms.

As the illustration linked above shows, if you are looking to do them during their time in Canada then the Belgic shako is completely appropriate.

The crossbelt plate shows the battle honor "Maida" for the victory in 1806.

At what time?

The uniform in Egypt was different, it was made out of 5 or 6 Swiss regiments in British service fighting in Switzerland 1800 – 1801

In "Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars" Digby Smith describes De Watteville's as follows: "The uniform was a conical British shako, red coat, black facings, white buttons, white, bastion-ended lace with a black line, in pairs on the chest. Small clothes and belts were white."

He notes that the unit was raised in 1801 and disbanded in 1816 but doesn't specify the period that the uniform description covers.

Be aware that the loops on the cuff of the Private on the left are upside down, though the buttons are where they should be on the cuff.

Going through my files I found this illustration by Malcolm McGregor.

It's from a Maida article in the War Monthly Magazine from 1974.
