Brilliant. The chess pieces are such an obvious choice, but I never, ever thought of it. The Harry Potter tip is fantastic.

I didn't notice on the blog -- what colors did you use under the PVA to get the nice frozen water effect?

just painted grey as per fountain – then added PVA to a depth of about 3mm and left to dry

Those look great. The Harry Potter chessmen were a little pricey, but I found some from the old Lowe Renaissance chessmen that should fit the bill for fantasy or … Renaissance periods.
