We were playing a Battletech campaign many years ago where the first battle was always a river crossing into the enemy's territory. The next battle would be in the loser's territory and a subsequent lost had the last battle outside the capital.

We had played quite a few games, going back and forth, when during one of the river crossing battles, Pete pulled out a surprise. He had scratch-built a bridge that would allow his Mechs to sprint across the river.

On his first turn Pete moved the bridge up to the river and deployed it. Unfortunately he had made the bridge 2″ too short. The game was forever referred to as the Bridge Too Short game.
