More than one I bet. How many crew do you think different sized mecha would require, from the 10 footers on up to skyscraper sized? |

I was under the impression that all mechs had a crew of only one. |

Battletech mechs with a few exceptions are single seat. Reaper's CAV have two seats in the larger mechs. |

two if Pacific rim is anything to go by…

I'd say that two (or more) for larger mechs would make sense… it allows for injuries and engineers. Smaller mechs, one pilot. I guess it would also depend on the control method and where the crew is positioned within the mech… |

The classic Battlemaster from Battletech was the one notable two-seater mech; but Mechs are largely one person vehicles. VTOLs over 15 tons had pilot plus at least one gunner. |

Most Mecha have one or two. Single Pilot or Pilot and Gunner Combination. Most of the Mecha in Macross have 1 except for the MAC-II Monster which has 3, a commander, a pilot, and a gunner. Gundams GMs, and Zeon Mobile Suits are usually 1, Guntanks are 2. Blue Gender had both 1 and 2 crewed mecha. Etc… Really you do not see any more than that until you get the weird combination mecha like the various Voltrons or Starvengers |

Pacific Rim, though being a fine movie, had the lamest excuse for why two crew were needed that I ever heard. Macross – anywhere from one to three crew (one for most while the Monster had three) |

Well, 40k titans have at least 3, plus crews could be many more depending on size and diaclone had several depending on size which is what got me thinking. I'm not a gundam fan so I don't know anything about it. |

The second silliest thing about mechs is that they need a crew at all. |
Sargonarhes | 12 Dec 2015 9:11 p.m. PST |
Actually the Macross was a mech as well, and we knew of it's bridge crew of 5, how many more was not directly known. And then we could go into the crazy insane scale of Gurren Lagunn did towards the end. |

In the old Battletech(3025), a merc would have him/herself as the pilot, a 'squire' trainee, a scout in a FAV, one chief mechanic, two apprentice mechanics, a merchant for buy/sell/scrounge for parts, maybe one or two bodyguard/security people. The rest would be back with the baggage-bullet train. Very technofeudal. |

@Skippy: Not really that unreasonable, if you look at modern military. The difference was that the Mercenary pilot was supporting all those people directly instead of having different commands responsible for them. I can make a good case for small mecha (like Appleseed Landmates or Gasaraki Tactical Armors) having a crew of 1. They're just a bigger infantryman in intent. But the reverse could also be true, where mecha are descended from tanks and therefore have multiple crew. Really big mecha with onboard nuclear reactors have a pretty good argument for large crew. One to drive, one to babysit the powerplant, one or more to shoot. |
