My friend John comanded the British forces while I had a comand of the Graf Spee. Results were pretty close to historical though my effort to drive for the open sea was perhaps a bit more determined (not that it helped me) link

Was this a riverine action? |
vtsaogames | 11 Dec 2015 8:18 a.m. PST |
The actual battle was at the mouth of the River Plate (or Plata) but not really a riverine fight. |

Correct it was a battle off the coast near a river than on a river. link |

Not on the Platte River, then? |

OK, OK we get it, they misspelled the name of the river in the title. I still knew what they were talking about, and members can't edit titles once they are created. Enough already, for crying out loud! BWW |

Not to be that guy but the cruisers were not "English", two were British and one was New Zealand. Fatman |

Doesn't bother me actualy John each time they comment it get bumped up and honestly I think it reflects worse on them than on me. I do apologize for the failure to note that one of the Cruisers was New Zealand. |

If people are going to be really picky then it should be noted that technically Achilles was part of the New Zealand Division of the (British) Royal Navy. The Royal New Zealand Navy as an independent entity did not exist until 1941, when the correct prefix became HMNZS, prior to that it should be HMS. |

Nice report. Naval Thunder is my go to Naval rule set for Pre-Dreads-WWII especially for surface actions. Played this scenario many times along with Denmark Straight…they are great for learning the game and demos at conventions. Have not played in awhile as I have been distracted with other ventures, but 2016 will likely be the year to dust off the ships. What models and scale are you using? Most of my WWII are 1/1800 War at Sea repaints and WWI and before are 1/2400 various makes. Here are a few of my older posts: Yellow Sea: link Battle of Ulsan: link Battle of River Plate: link |

Adamc- Thanks for posting. I remember reading a story about this when I was in grade school back in the late 1960s – early 1970s. It may have been "The Second World War" magazine. I had a teacher who was a USMC vet. There was a bookstore about a block from our school and he sent me to get him a copy of the latest issue of the magazine. I thumbed through it at the store and on the way back to school. The next day I brought money to school and stopped at the store on the way home and got my own copy. Just recently started to look into naval gaming after exclusively doing land war games. (That's my thread about Pearl Harbor out on the main page.) Thanks for sharing, I read through you AAR and it brought back some long ago memories. |
