"What uniform did Grille (SdKfz 138/1) crew wear?" Topic

OK, I spent quite a bit of time googling this but I can't find an answer, so I turn to the collective wisdom of TMP.

I am painting up a Grille M in 1/72 but the kit does not come with crew figures, but I don't know what uniform they wore.

Wikipedia tells me that the Grille was

"… intended to take service in the schwere Infanteriegeschütz Companies within the Panzergrenadier Regiments, inside Panzer and Panzergrenadier Divisions, in their heavy infantry gun units."

So did they wear Sturmartillerie or Panzer uniform with cap because they were vehicle crew? Or did they wear infantry uniform with helmets because they were infantry gun crew?

Some photos of the Grille H shows crew with caps but I can't be sure about their uniforms:

Are they wearing greatcoat or panzer uniform?

Definitely not Panzer black. I'd guess standard infanterie feldgrau.

Thanks, Richard. But did they wear the panzer cut uniform in feldgrau like assault gun crew, or did they wear infantry cut uniform in feldgrau?

Those chaps in the top photo seem to be wearing short vehicle crew jackets.

As vehicle crew they would have worn the short jacket as it was less likely to get caught up on things in the vehicle. Helmets worn in combat (see the bottom photo).

These would have been considered assault gun crews and would have worn the panzer uniform in the field gray colors.

I am reasonably sure they wore panzer style uniforms but in feldgrau much like the assault gun crews
