Help needed with Stalingrad buildings did the Russians ever paint the fronts of their buildings if they did what colours would they have used.

Any help would be much appreciated

If you search for color images of Stalingrad, you can find a few. Many of the buildings in Stalingrad had brick facades (both red and white bricks). I imagine many (most? all?) wood buildings had been burned down by the time the urban fighting started. There are chimney graveyard photos where there had been rows of wooden houses. I don't know whether plaster and related facades got painted, but maybe even those would have had the paint burned off and just smoke stains remaining?

Thanks this is great news I wanted some variation with my stalingrad buildings

I would go with some brink and also a lot of grey due to being scorched.
Here is a pic of the buildings I made for my Stalingrad game ran at Historicon a couple of years ago.

Thanks for your replies I'm unsure what to do.

Paint red bricks and grey or do I add a splash of colour

In Jason Mark's books he has photos of a lot of buildings from the time and he's found some of them still standing today so you can see what color brick they had. There are of course some buildings preserved in their state at the battle and you can see what color they are.

If you'd like some fun you can walk around Volgograd using streetview in Google maps. For example if you go to Pribaltiskya Ulitsa in Volgograd and use street view, those buildings were there during the battle. What is interesting is that they have been completely rebuilt on their former footprint. They were all brick buildings at the time of the battle and after the war some time they were rebuilt.

I thought that the men in womble's black and white photo looked too clean and tidy to have fought their way across the steppe to Stalingrad. Sure enough they are Italian re-enactors from the Progetto900 group. As seen in their logo on the photo.

Sorry womble.

_Island of Fire_ is the best of his books I would say. I'm not sure it's easy to get anymore.

I'll keep an eye out for any of his works

Finally dug out my copy of "The Onslaught – the German drive to Stalingrad in 150 unpublished colour photographs".

It covers German operations from 22 June 1941 through to 16 October 1942. Consequently most photos are not of Stalingrad itself, but there are plenty showing the hamlets, villages and towns on the way there. White render is very common. Some buildings have coloured window surrounds, but what that colour is is anyone's guess. They are just a general murky dark colour unfortunately. In Stalingrad itself white render is again apparent.

In that case then I'll do a few with white render thanks for all your help. I'm going to search for images of stalingrad and see what I can identify

As far as I can tell from studying this question most buildings in the city are made of brick with plaster over the brickwork. Often the plaster detail is quite elaborate. The brick color seems to vary from quite yellow to a terracotta red.

I think you would find the buildings were painted many different colors. Many seem to be light colors, probably white or light gray. I would go with what looks cool. A war blasted, bombed out city looks good in shades of gray. I would mute any bright colors and add black above windows representing soot from past fires.
