Can any one assist me regards the uniform paint colours for late war russians IE when they invade germany etc . But in need the colours in real colours not velajio or gw colours equivalents i suppose

Thank you

There was considerable variation shown, due to differences in dyes, fading in the field, materials etc.

I don't have it anymore, but I used to have a few photos from a guy who collected ww2 stuff, and he had three red army jackets, ranging from a plain brown to tobacco green to a faded light green.

Like Weasel said. The key to Soviet uniform colors is not to be uniform.

I have a mix from tan to faded green. Pants and jacket seldom match.

ok so keep it colours like khaki, olive , olive drab ,umber , earth , Flat earth , also have a velajio japanese unifrom colour

Weasel08 Dec 2015 1:34 p.m. PST

yeah, most I have seen range from the browns to the greens. They probably ought to lean more into the greens, but brown makes them more distinct on the table, compared to germans or americans.

I think the winter stuff was generally more olive greenish than the summer uniform, which started (theoretically) as a light green, then faded pretty quickly to khaki.

At least, that's how I justified painting all my Russians khaki, and I'm sticking with it.

If anything the padded winter uniforms are much more on the brown side, the cotton summer uniforms had the most variation from light tan to mid green.

I just paint all my Russians khaki, which matches most of the original and repro Russian kit I've got. Interestingly, like many khaki shades, it acquires the hue of the surroundings, so it actually looks green in woodland.

The plash palatka is a dark green shade (on many figures these seem to get painted grey! I suppose it looks cool and they might conceivably be blankets).

I am with Martin – I paint all my Russian uniforms khaki and then wash them with a sepia or mud wash

Here are some of mine that I donated to Toys for Tots

Russian uniforms, amusingly in this photo the plashes seem to have turned brown in the woodland light!

as has the light green uniform the guy in the M35 helmet is wearing.

I paint them in a vodka-induced haze, and use whatever brown or green is within reach. It produces a nice non-uniform effect.

Even new uniform could be in different colours, so after half a year of usage/washing the colour can be anything from pale green to light brown…

Those look fine to me except that I wouldn't have the jackets and trousers the same shade as each other.

I went with simplicity and painted all my Russians the same Vallejo Russian Uniform Green. It takes me long enough to paint figures without having to add time making decisions on how many of this color and how many of that color.

marklt3111 Dec 2015 10:08 a.m. PST

I will give them a shot

Didnt we do this all before?

didnt it end up with this being written?

I use russian uniform green.

marklt3111 Dec 2015 4:32 p.m. PST

If you look at ww2 pictures in colour of russian soldiers it says a different story of colours

Weasel16 Dec 2015 2:14 p.m. PST

Looks pretty decent.

Troops in the same unit were probably likely to have received uniforms at the same time and from the same supplier (possibly) so probably fairly similar within the unit.
