Brother can you spare a dime? LOL! Not a dime, just some suggestions… I've been doing land gaming for a while and want to try outsome naval gaming. Checked out a game or two at the Fall-In! con a few weeks ago. With Dec. 7th right ahead of us, I thought Pearl Harbor would be a good test case. I could do it solo as the Japanese since the US mainly has to react and try to keep its head attached to its shoulders. Just starting up, I'm looking to use the Top-Downs from Mike's Own Wargames Page. cke1st.com/m_games4.htm I've got photos and maps of the harbor area to rough out a playing surface. This I'll keep low, flat and simple since I'll be using flats instead of models. I have some simple, free rules to use since I'm going solo and just starting out. I have lists a aircraft used by both sides. But this is where it gets more involved. Can anyone point me to a scenario that I can use to plug in info and goals. Obviously I'd have to adapt things to make my patchwork quilt work. But this is just an experiment and I'm looking to get the feel of the game so complexity and massive detail aren't needed. I looked at the printable game on Junior General and got some ideas but would like to see if anyone can shuffle me a little farther down the road. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. The problem is that Pearl Habour isn't really a naval battle, its an air battle where the targets just happen to be afloat. Added to which the only way the Japanese can actually "win" is if Nagumo grows a pair and launches a third strike to hit the Fuel Depot and dry docks. Even if the US carriers had been caught in harbour and sunk the fact that Pearl remained a useable base meant that the US could take the offensive with ships moved from the Atlantic. Fatman |

Could be a naval battle if you do some 'what-ifs' – have the radar warning listened to, have the US carriers in range… |

Fatman- Yes I did not say well what I needed to say. The scenario would definitely be a air 2 air and air 2 ground/ship. That is what my poorly worded sentence, "I have lists of aircraft used by both sides. But this is where it gets more involved." was referring to. I need to account for hundreds of planes in the air and hundreds on the ground. Mr. Editor- I've looked at some boardgames with some such what-ifs. I'm barely floating in air v air/ground/ship. I may sink with ship v ship thrown in on top of that. Wackmole9- That is the Junior General scenario that I referred to in my OP. It does look like fun and am using a lot of the info including the planning/staging to pull it all off. Thanks for the replies. If anybody has anything else to add, I'd appreciate hearing from you. |

Our group did a relief of Wake scenario, years ago. Its right after Pearl Harbor, and uses a couple of US and part of Nagumo's Japanese carriers on their way home after the Pearl Harbor raid. If I recall correctly it was Saratoga and Lexington vs Hiryu and Soryu. Just a suggestion as a "what if" version of the relief of Wake using some of the forces involved at Pearl Harbor. It might lessen your work load a bit. |

Not to be off subject, butI had a somewhat creepy exchange at work today-I am taking care of a 90+ old year Navy man wh had been in WWII,and whose ship was hit by a kamikaze. He says he remembers seeing the pilot for an instant before it hit,and he said the guy was grinning. That just weirded me out. |

Many (many) years ago, we did a mini-campaign on 7 Dec using the GQ 1/2 rules where the Japanese detached the two BCs and some DDs (and I forget exactly which, if any, of the cruisers) from the kido butai to steam in an shell the tank farm and dry docks. I commanded the Japanese force. We managed to evade detection and arrive off the mouth of the harbor at dawn 8 Dec, and successfully shell the tank farm and dry docks, and then evade the heaviest of the USN surface forces (they had one BB – I forget which – and even if not damaged we were faster); however, Lexington found us and we lost one of the BCs to her air attack. |

codiver- Interesting scenario. Would have made an interesting real life event. I wonder if that was added to the plan if the Japanese might have gone through with a third wave of air attacks. |
