I've been wondering for a while what the maximum practical size for a Star Wars Armada game would be. We may have found out today! My friend Eric and I both got our Wave 2 goodies and decided to turn them loose. I took my new MC 80 and MC 30 and an assault frigate, two Nebulons, two Corvettes and about a dozen squadrons against Eric's Imperial SD, two Victory SDs, a Gladiator, two Raiders and about ten squadrons. Each of us were at a little over 800 points.

It was a good game, but took an hour to set up and three hours to play four turns. A usual game is done in about two hours. So we may have reached the limit for a one-on-one game. With multiple players it might be possible to go a little bigger.

The game itself was pretty cool. Eric deployed in a long line while I massed my guys in a clump shifted left a bit. This allowed me to concentrate more firepower and this proved decisive. The Gladiator and two Raiders were unable to really get into the action. But wow, the Imperial SD is mean! It came right on and a single salvo from its forward batteries destroyed one of my Nebulons. Ouch! But that left the Imperial looking down the throat of pretty much my entire fleet. Fortunately I have a lot of squadron orders in effect and was able to swarm it with a half dozen squadrons, which took down shields and did considerable damage and used up defense tokens. Then the rest of my ships one by one pounded and pounded, helped enormously by three criticals ALL of which were the Structural Damage result, doing three extra hits! Eventually the huge ship exploded. After that it was pretty much a matter of mopping up. A Victory SD went down the next turn and another was badly damaged. Only my MC 80 was hurt in return (except for the poor Nebulon).

A big fleet, kept well in hand gives you enormous firepower. Concentrated against one target, even a big, powerful ship like an Imperial can't survive long.

I find that I am really liking this game!

Nice AAR Scott. I also played an Armada game today. Only 400 points per side. 35 minutes to setup and finished in 90.

I had 2 MC80 and an Assault Frigate, along with 3 A wings. THe Imperial's had one of each of their ships. ISD, VSD GSD and a Raider, one Tie and one of the Rogues.

I deployed in a Vee with the Frigate in the center leading. THe Imperials were in line abreast with the GSD out a bit to the far side. The Assault Frigate was the first ship to die. Then the ISD and lastly one of the MC80s. THe VSD was all most gone (would have been as I got first fire at range 1 with Acabar and concentrate fire command.

We called it a tie. The ISD used the tractor twice to mess with my formation. It was a tough call using Acabar as I ended up engaging on only one side. But the MC80 has poor fore and aft firepower.

I think that next time I will go with only 1 MC80 and get more smaller ships. I hated getting pounded at the end of each turn as he had 4 ships to my 3.

That looks fun! Did you up the table size at all?

ScottWashburn Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Dec 2015 1:37 p.m. PST

We just use whatever size table is available. This one was about 4' x 6'. We're terrible about all the various set-up rules :) Neither one of us has ever understood how the objective rules work, so we never use them, either. But we have fun all the same.

Nice game, still waiting for Barnes & Noble to get the Wave 2 ships in.

I've found that huge X-Wing games with multiple players move along pretty quickly. Several players can move simultaneously with ships that are not direclty engaged across those moves.

That should work just fine in Armada too!

This is awesome! I'm glad to see someone trying this out and that it works! I'm also hoping to get my first game (the intro scenario) in over the Christmas break!!!

Great stuff! Love it!
