Last night we had our second game of a new rule set (for us) – L'Art de la Guerre. I've posted a review of the rules and a battle report (Rome vs Seleukids) over at the blog. link Cheers! |

That's a very thorough and useful report !… We're just getting to grips with ADLG (as some simplify it) ourselves so good to be able to follow your experiences … Thanks Phil Ancients on the Move |

So since the both of you have played, how are the rules as far as getting to the point? By that I mean, are the mechanics short and straight forward? Is there just a single layer of damage or is there other little statuses that need to be marked as well? I like the simple and straight forward. I don't need to know that the first legion failed its morale check because it failed its dysentery check on the previous turn. I am intrigued by the rules but don't want to shell out $50 USD for a set of rules I'll never play. |

Units have cohesion levels that need to be recorded so losses are cumulative rather than all or nothing a la DBx but I have little experience (just one mini-game) yet which is why this and Tim P's ( TMP link ) postings are so useful … Agree it isn't a chep buy-in (what is, these glossy days?) … Seems pretty simple though … Phil |

$50 USD isn't cheap but you get everything. All the army lists are included, so no recurring $20 USD/pop for army list books. |

Saw it being played at club last night with Chris and Big Mike. they seemed to be enjoying it. They were using DBM bases with no problem. martin |

no recurring $20 USD USD/pop for army list books. Hugely important to me! Units have cohesion levels that need to be recorded so losses are cumulative rather than all or nothing a la DBx but I have little experience (just one mini-game) Good to know. I have no problem with the degrading morale of the game. I just don't like it when there are also other little side conditions that should have been incorporated in the cohesion/morale level of the unit to begin with. Thanks for the link. I'll study it a bit more closely. Saw it before but pretty much glossed over the page. |

Thanks for all your comments gents. I really like the way these rules handle. They deserve to become a real leader in the ancients mass battle arena. We have also been amassing War of the Roses period forces for Bloody Battles which will allow us to try out the rules for the later medieval period. I'll report back anon when that gets underway. |

I purchased the rules at Noble Knight for $34 USD USD. I have also seen it at war game conventions for around that price as well. I purchased the rules, but have not played a game yet. I was able to observe some at Fall In in November. Game is really growing. In the 28mm tournament event, there were over 20 players. 15mm had a strong showing also. Looks like different parts of USA are starting to run more and more games. |

Pretty straightforward game. You can use all your bases from most other ancient games (especially DBX). Games typically run 2 hours or less if both parties are familiar w rules. This makes for an excellent tournament format as you'll have time to hit the vendors. Fun multiplayer, too, over a weekend w/ friends. Also, examples of play are nicely illustrated. Finally, I like that all the pictures of painted miniatures look like ordinary figures from someone's 'well painted' set (not the professional top shelf you see in most rules sets these days). Nothing else is required once you have the book except some 6 sided dice, measuring sticks and lead. Rules are good for any scale. The book contains well over 250 army lists. Talk of a Renaissance rules set to come out in 2+ years has been rumored…. Also, good online support from the rules creator. |

Interesting. I looked at the rules in the Orc's Nest (London) a couple of times but wasn't sure how they differed from other rules or how complex they might be. |
