Though I live now in northern Virginia, I grew up in Sacramento and later lived for many years in the Central Valley. From there, trips to San Jose and LA were relatively easy to make. I mourned the loss of Burbank's Last Grenadier and now in San Jose, the great D&J's looks to be slipping away:

Man, that is really sad.

Reflecting on the shops that I frequented over the years, I'm left with lots of great memories of places long gone. The two stores that remain have changed their focus so much, that they hold almost nothing for me. The times are a changin', and I'm a dinosaur.

The Last Grenadier provided my first figures/armies when I first got into war gaming.

Darn, I really liked D&J.
Any time I had a business trip out that way I would make sure to have extra time to stop there and the Winchester Mansion.

$500 USDK worth of debt….how did he do that?

Customers are buying their hobby supplies on line at discounts that stores can't match.

Unfortunately, D&J has been declining for a number of years as the article implied.

But being from Sacramento, I'm sure you'll be happy to know that Viking Hobbies is still going strong. I remember buying my 1st D&D book there in 1979.

Rrobbyrobot05 Dec 2015 1:04 p.m. PST

That's good news about Viking Hobby. Sorry about D&J.

McWong7305 Dec 2015 1:22 p.m. PST

It isn't debt technically, could be a mixture of things.

Katwerks05 Dec 2015 1:57 p.m. PST

The Last Grenadier's customer service had been in decline for number of years.

A real shame.

I used to buy a lot of stuff, and spend hours there.

It was the go to place, after San Antonio Hobbies in Mt. View closed about a decade ago.

Not surprising though, with the very expensive real estate rental pricing, and taxes though.

Add in a weak economy (probably less so in the Bay Area), and plummeting real wages for a lot of the middle class, coupled with the ability to buy stuff at a discount on-line, and I suspect it was inevitable.

as Irishserb said, "I am a dinosaur". The few stores in my area have little of interest to me any more.

A B&M store that doesn't have an online presence and sufficient stock to provide fast service will not last.

Dang! Sorry to see this – used to visit them and San Antonio back when I lived in the Bay Area and later when I visited on business – sad to see.
