link Review of The World of Tiers, Volume 1 by Philip Jose Farmer. Interesting premise of godlike technological beings creating their own private universes. Blake |

There was a D&D wilderness adventure based on this in News From Bree many (many..many..many) years ago and it always intrigued me – and I lifted the Gates & Pocket Universes idea for my own D&D games. When I eventually read the books – and that was just a couple of years ago – I found them sadly disappointing. Farmer had great ideas, but sometimes the execution of them – the plot and characters that he wrapped around them – could be a bit 2-dimensional. I was struck by how similar the concept of the world of tiers is to Riverworld, which I really enjoyed (although that was years ago and I haven't re-read recently!). Riverworld had the edge for me as Farmer could use, as characters, anyone who had ever lived. |

We had DnD treasures inspired by those books. We too used the Universe hopping aspects in our games |

Well, to give Farmer his due, his stories are 50 years old, and are rather "old school". On the other hand, his World of Tiers stories were the source of Zelazny's Amber stories, which are so much superior. |
