Sometime in the next three to five days, Squadron Strike will have a 2nd edition put up on the Ad Astra website.

Several changes have been made, to fighter combat, dealing with torpedoes and missiles, and some wording has been clarified in weapon traits. The campaign system that nobody ever used has been removed, as has the ground combat engine, which will be revamped into a new product. There are more examples in the rulebook, and some choices were made to make larger games more interesting.

The included setting and SSD book are the Empire/Directorate War. One of the projects for next year is rebuilding the Diaspora setting to something that's more fun to read and revamping the ships to make them more fun to play. The setting book will be in two volumes; the first is a 52 page "fly through" tutorial, with fictional lead ins to the scenario. Each scenario adds a few new rules at a time until you've got the entire game under your belt. The second is an expanded section of historical scenarios that build off of the tutorial and make it into a fully fledged campaign game.

If you're a fan of the Starfire setting materials, where there are scenarios with interludes, this should scratch the same fictional itch.

The SSD book includes a fortress, and 2D and 3D versions of every SSD.

Below are some of the art pieces we did for the book -- hat tip to Charles Oines, of course.

If you're waiting for a back-order, it will be fulfilled as a 2nd edition game.

If you've bought the PDF rulebooks, there will be a discount code emailed to you to buy new versions of the PDFs for the new edition.

And, of course, if you already own the game, we'll be selling upgrade kits that replace all the items in the box that changed.

Excellent news!

I need to see if I can get a friend of mine interested in pushing spaceships around…

I've only gotten to play first edition a few times! Well, I'm sure I'll buy an upgrade. It will be more fun than upgrading to Windows 10.

I've seen the tutorial for Squadron Strike: Traveller, and it's an absolutely excellent way to learn the game. It's a series of scenarios that starts out with action-by-action hand-holding ("Do this. Now, do this. Here's exactly what you write down for the next step.") and progresses to completely free-choice scenarios, and up to a large squadron engagement with all the fixin's.

And with an entirely new setting book, ships, and scenarios, it's a lot more value than just a new set of rules.

Congrats, Ken!

Does the upgrade include box minis?

"And, of course, if you already own the game, we'll be selling upgrade kits that replace all the items in the box that changed."

I guess "all" would cover box minis.

I would have guessed not, but, hey, maybe they'll have two levels of upgrades.

I've seen the tutorial for Squadron Strike: Traveller,

Part of the game itself? Until you mentioned "completely free-choice scenarios" I thought you meant online somewhere.

Yes, part of the Traveller supplement in the works. The 52-page tutorial mentioned here must be the same sort of thing. Why else would you need that many pages?

emckinney06 Dec 2015 10:21 a.m. PST

Do you not want the box minis for the new ships? I'm not sure how much of a savings that would be. Might be better just to buy the PDF if you really don't want the physical items.

Fabe Mrk 206 Dec 2015 10:38 a.m. PST

Oh,I want box minis for the new ships. Its just I didn't see them list in the components on the store page

The update does include the box miniatures. Sorry for confusion, we accidentally left it off of the store! (That's fixed now.)

The tutorial booklet in 2nd Edition will be mirrored in SS: Traveller, which was developed in parallel with this product. (Traveller is Mode 2, this tutorial is Mode 1, Traveller uses a few more options).

And yeah, I'm really pleased with it.

… And They've Found One

Fabe Mrk 207 Dec 2015 10:47 a.m. PST

Thanks for clearing things up. Even without box mini I would still be buying this new edition but its nice to know they are there.

Ad Astra News08 Dec 2015 7:28 a.m. PST

Close Action!

Nice, looking forward to it Ken!
