Great report NFWS! Wonderful pictures and figures. Thanks for posting.
We have enough figures for this game in our group. I've got Athenians, others have Greeks, and Macedonians.
We'll have to give it a go using Armati 2 rules.

Thanks very much all! Yes 15mm figures throughout Peter's amazing collection.

Father Grigori04 Dec 2015 6:12 p.m. PST

Just out of interest, what rules did you use? Armati, or something else?

Looks like they used the big battles variant of DBA.

Afterword notes that it was DBA 3.

One caveat though – it also notes a combat factor of 6 for deep pikes (rear support) and 4 for the single element line of spears. In DBA 3 the spears should have gotten a flank support bonus of +1.

This would have given the spears a factor of 5 as long as at least one of its flanks was still aligned with another spear unit.

Yes that's right. I didn't want to list the entire list of tactical variables in the blog, DBA players will know them and the rest of us probably don't care – the main point is that Phalanxes have an edge of Spears so long as they keep together….

Was this a self-developed scenario or did you take it from a published source?
