Calling all Pacific War enthusiasts and fans of epic spectacle games alike in the Southern California area…

On the weekend of Friday Dec. 18th, Saturday Dec. 19th, and Sunday Dec. 20th, consider reserving a slice of your time to check out the HMGS-PSW Saint Crispin's Irregulars club's massive WAKE ISLAND game, incorporating US and Imperial Japanese land, sea and air forces.

This event will take place in the newly opened Game Club space next-door to legendary Brookhurst Hobbies, located at 12188 Brookhurst St, Garden Grove, CA 92840.

It's a $3 USD charge at the door to spend as much of the day as you want playing on the tables.

The Wake Island game will go on throughout the weekend, and planning is in the works for other Pacific War themed land, sea, and air games to be played on the surrounding tables.

If you've never seen one of the Saint Crispin's Irregulars epic miniature conflagrations, here's your chance!

Meanwhile, here are some pics from the last time they ran this scenario, at the Yanks Air Museum in Chino, California, back in 2012…

Great stuff, really like the figures and all the equipment, inspiring terrain. I have all those figures and I've been wondering what to do with them. Where did you get the bulldozer. The other vehicles are all very good too.

How about a tutorial on how to make this layout.

one of the few Island battle that will fit on a table at a reasonable ground scale

Seen the layout in person at the HMGS-PSW mini conventions. A fun afternoon for the players. After the game a trip to Brookhurst hobbies next door for future reinforcements.

Ditto!

Wow looks awesome. Checking my calendar to see if I can come visit during one of those 3 days. $3 USD admission would be worth it even if I only gawked.

Mad Guru05 Dec 2015 6:58 p.m. PST

Hey, guys, thanks for all the positive comments!

@john lacour: yes, it cost millions!

@Bobgnar & Joe: the terrain is made from a 12' x 8' piece of blue carpet. The island and its interior details were chalked out beforehand, then spray-painted on.

The bulldozer is a plastic 1/48 scale Tamiya kit.

@CeruLucifus: hope you can make it! If you come to gawk you will hopefully end up rolling some USMC or Imperial Japanese dice!

Excellent, is that 25MM?

zoneofcontrol06 Dec 2015 7:34 a.m. PST

Cool. Stumbled across a Wake Island game in progress at a con way over here on the other coast. Was already in progress so I didn't play but watched for a couple of turns. Seeing your pics above reminded me, hope you have fun. Looks like a good game waiting to happen.

Mad Guru06 Dec 2015 4:41 p.m. PST

@Joe: You're very welcome!

@zoneofcontrol: Thanks for the positive vibes from the other coast!

@War Wizard: yes, 25mm-28mm, with the odd 1/48 scale vehicle.

Bumping this thread back to the top as a friendfly reminder to any/all WWII gamers in the SoCal area available this coming weekend, when the Saint Crispins Irregulars of HMGS-PSW (Pacific South-West) will be running an all-weekend-long WAKE ISLAND game on 16'x8' of tabletop.

While primarily an amphibious land wargame, players will also control air and sea assets which can and will impact the results.

As per the GM:

The Japanese fly a pre war reconnaissance in a kawanishi flying boat to photograph the island. This will be done by dicing to discover camouflaged gun emplacements. If they spot the hidden targets before being escorted by the island air patrol they can then target specifically with their bombers.

After several bombing missions, the invasion force will appear and the IJN will bombard the island with several destroyers and a cruiser. When the come within close range to launch their landing craft, the shore batteries will open up on them.

Any surviving American aircraft (F4F Wildcats will try and intercept bombers or bomb ships as they did historically.

Command currency will be spent by the Americans to repair the bombed runway, fix damaged aircraft, move troops around the island, gather civilian volunteers to help man the batteries etc.

Again, this event will be taking place at the new Brookurst Hobbies Game Club, located right next-door to the well-known Brookhurst Hobbies at 12188 Brookhurst St, Garden Grove, CA 92840.

Walk-in players welcome all day Saturday December 19th and Sunday the 20th, so come on down and hope to see you there!
