Metal or plastic figures? |
nevinsrip | 01 Dec 2015 11:49 p.m. PST |
Metal Redout figures if I had to choose one. But I mix in metal and plastic with abandon! |

Plastic Perry no doubt. Cheap, high quality figs that don't chip. |

Hard plastic all the way – better detail, easier to prep, lighter to cart around, and slightly cheaper – what's not to like! |

Another vote for Perry Plastics! |

I was underwhelmed by Perry Plastics, not much ability to change position etc. I'd go with Old Glory Metal…even though I do like hard plastic figures. |

Perry plastics via the Battle Box . Great way to start. |
langobard | 02 Dec 2015 3:53 a.m. PST |
The vast majority would be Perry plastics, but I'd look to the various metal ranges for things like commanders. |
Axebreaker | 02 Dec 2015 4:04 a.m. PST |
I prefer metal and most my collection is metal and I would do it again that way. I really like Redoubt miniatures plus Sash and Sabre and Foundry have great choices as. I've augmented my collection with some plastic, but didn't really like it very much. Generally speaking metal also holds it's value better then plastic. Christopher |

Perry plastic.. but i've just seen their bredan rifles in metal on their facebook page so i'll vote for both; a metal and plastic mix |
Rich Bliss | 02 Dec 2015 4:46 a.m. PST |
Metal, Old Glory to be specific. |
avidgamer | 02 Dec 2015 4:46 a.m. PST |
Both… some Perry plastic and Sash & Saber/2nd Gen OG metals. Mix them all together and you have the best of both worlds. |
Grelber | 02 Dec 2015 5:22 a.m. PST |
Actually, I'm planning on starting ACW armies. The bulk will be plastics, supplemented by metal figures from Perry, OG and Sash & Saber. Last I heard, Perrys were working on a box of plastic Union infantry. When that comes out, I'll probably get off dead center and start buying, but for now, I'm finishing up other projects (Yeah, I know, a novel concept). Grelber |

Metal for me. Sash and Saber and Perry. Old glory second generation as well. |
FreemanL | 02 Dec 2015 5:49 a.m. PST |
I think I'd still buy what I currently have. I love the Dixon figures for their accuracy and just pure character. But Forgotten Glorious, Perry and old, Old Glory are just as heavily represented in my two armies. LOL! I think I am a sucker for the figure or unit, not necessarily the company. If it's close to 28mm and I like it, it will find a way into the collection! Larry |

Metal all the way – any period and any scale. |
etotheipi | 02 Dec 2015 6:54 a.m. PST |
I am not a big WNA gamer, but the figures I have are a mix and I like them for what they are, so, another vote for both. |
Ligniere | 02 Dec 2015 6:59 a.m. PST |
As Grelber suggests, plastic with a liberal sprinkling of metal command and other metal figures or poses included within the units. A ratio of 1:4 metal to plastic. Best of both worlds, and a little more heft to the individual stands. |
Hlaven | 02 Dec 2015 8:23 a.m. PST |
Redoubt without a doubt. Size, poses, head variants, types of troops, their horses, and their artillery. Don't get me wrong. I have most of the other manufacturers also. I just personally like Redoubt a lot more. |
ScottS | 02 Dec 2015 8:54 a.m. PST |
I AM starting new – well, a couple of months ago. I've been wargaming for a long time, but am new to ACW. I generally went with Old Glory 2nd and Redoubt for infantry, Sash & Saber for Cavalry, and Perry for Artillery. I also mix-and-match in a few figures from other lines for variety. All metal; I just don't like plastic. |
Miniatureships | 02 Dec 2015 8:57 a.m. PST |
Personally, I still prefer metal figures over plastic, if given the choice. Thus, if starting over, I would still start with metal and doubt very much that I would add any plastic figures to the mix. I would use Old Glory and Sash and Saber for starters, because they are figures that I can see and personally buy at the HMGS conventions. Mail order is fine for me, once I am able to see the figures up close – sorry, but pictures only do so much and in the past I have purchased figures based on photos only find out what I purchased was a paint job that didn't come with the figures. The reason that I like Old Glory and Sash and Saber, is not that I have easy access to the figures, but they have movement and character (which can also be applied to Redoubt figures as they were done by someone who learn from Dave Allosp). Too many of the newer figures are rather bland because mold makers want figures that don't require much to mold. |

Why are you limiting yourself to 28mm? I understand for 18th century and Napoleonics 28mm allows you to show off some rather outstanding uniforms. This justifies the increased cost and space 28mm requires. For ACW though, uniforms are not as much an issue. 1/72 plastic would allow you to build up armies at a lower cost, while 15mm metal would allow you to have armies that take up less space. |
Delbruck | 02 Dec 2015 9:53 a.m. PST |
I am a plastics convert, but I find the original Perry ACW infantry box somewhat disappointing. I think it unlikely that Perry would release the army box if the had plans for a box of plastic union infantry. Having said that, I would be tempted by Old Glory 2nd edition if I found them to be compatible with Perry. |

Sash and Sabre or Old Glory. |
Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut | 02 Dec 2015 10:21 a.m. PST |
Plastic. Oee box each of North and South would meet my needs, as I am strictly a skirmish gamers. |

Metal but then I wouldn't ever do ACW in 28mm. |
Der Alte Fritz | 02 Dec 2015 10:42 a.m. PST |
Metals: Redoubt, Connoisseur, Old Glory 2nd Generation and Sash & Saber for me. I like to mix them all up in the same unit to create the look of individuality. |

I did a couple of brigades at 1:20 scale for use with Longstreet a couple of years ago. I used Redoubt. If I had it to do over again, I would still use Redoubt, but I'd add in some figs from Steve Barber. I had a few of those I used at the end but would have used more if I'd known about them before I bought most of the lead. I was doing early war in the West so needed a lot of rebs with frock coats. If I'd done Yanks to fight them I'd have needed a lot of guys with sack coats and hats rather than kepis. Redoubt makes that possible. Here's my painted stuff: link |
GatorDave | 02 Dec 2015 12:26 p.m. PST |
Metal. Sash and Saber, Redoubt, and probably some Dixon just cause their cool! No plastics. I don't have enough time to paint never mind assemble stuff. |

I started painting 28mm ACW last year. I'm trying to limit it to skirmish gaming: Josey Wales meets the Beverly Hillbillies and the Three Stooges, and hi-jinks ensue. I was seduced by the Architects of War American Uncivil War metal figures. What great Americana these are! And debauched by the Perry plastics (If I split up a box of these I'll have all the rank-and-file I'll ever need for both sides…well, maybe three boxes…and some cavalry…). Extra Crispy, you have a lot to answer for. I plan to continue adding characterful metal figures to the mix as I find them: hillbillies, wild west, hookers and dandies. The Civil War in Sucks County is under way. |
Gunfreak | 02 Dec 2015 2:32 p.m. PST |
I've tried 28mm acw, but for me it looks wrong, for me acw are wide thin thin lines of grey or blue, i simply do not get that feel in 28mm, no mater how i base them. I get it in 15mm, but i do not enjoy painting 15mm acw. |
nevinsrip | 02 Dec 2015 3:03 p.m. PST |
Gunfreak, I did ACW in 54 mm metal. Pix are on TMP. |

I can understand the attraction of plastics but for me I prefer metal either Perrys or Sash and Sabre. |
jowady | 02 Dec 2015 3:54 p.m. PST |
I do plastic and metal and I mix them up. I love the detail on the newer Perry plastics, the body and weapon proportions are just right. I used to do redoubt in metal but frankly all the figures look too "well fed", they are really beefy. I can only hope that Perry does a box of plastic Union infantry. |
Wizard Whateley | 02 Dec 2015 8:28 p.m. PST |
If cost is not a factor, metal Dixon. |
figman1 | 03 Dec 2015 4:42 a.m. PST |
I really like the Perry plastics. Easy to clean and a cinch to paint. Throw in a few of their metals for variety and viola! Like Jowady, I really hope the Perry's do some plastic Union in sack coats soon. |

Oops, I meant Voilà. My apologies to our French speaking members and to my grade 8 French teacher who always encouraged me to take German in high school, now it makes sense why. Anyways, here's a pic of some Perry plastic WIP's with a couple metals thrown in. [URL=http://s267.photobucket.com/user/fig-man1/media/061_zps6uufbsml.jpg.html]
