Beaune-la-Rolande is a classic contest of quantity against quality. The German defenders are outnumbered 4-to-1 initially, which improves to 2-to-1 when their reinforcements arrive at halftime. This gave us an excellent game last night. Brief AAR is on my blog: link Chris Bloody Big BATTLES! link bloodybigbattles.blogspot.co.uk |

Yes, there's a touch of the colonial about it. |

By a touch of the colonial, do you mean because it has the Foreign Legion, spahis, and chasseurs d'Afrique? Chris |

Its asymmetrical character. |

Yes, it's certainly asymmetrical, and that's an important part of its appeal. That's true of a lot of the 1850-1900 wars. You've got rapid technological developments, weapons evolving rapidly, and tactics and doctrine struggling to keep up. So you get armies of very different character facing each other in very asymmetrical battles, and as wargamers we have the challenge of finding the best way to use a given army against a given opponent. I know I've been caught out using the tactics of the 'last war' – though in a sense it was the 'next war', since I'd been doing lots of Franco-Prussian games and found that my 1870 tactics didn't transfer well to fighting Sikh Wars in the 1840s … Chris Bloody Big BATTLES! link bloodybigbattles.blogspot.co.uk |
