Any recommendations for picture reference books covering Vikings, Saxons, and/or Normans? I was looking at the Osprey books online but they didn't have a 'look inside' feature, and had mixed reviews, with some saying the information was in need of updating. I was wondering if they were still worth buying, or if anything better was available? |

Most of the manufacturers have examples of their figures that are painted and on display at their sites. Most examples are exceptionally well done. And surely well researched. link Stay within the color ranges and paint them how ever you wish, I say. |

those are popular armies that many collect in 28 so looking Online at different blogs of people's collections would yield better results for pics and painting ideas than using the Ospreys for pictorial reference. The Ospreys however do note popular colors that were used in the texts for clothing and shield colors That same info can be found in wrg armies of the dark ages, or the supplement for war hammer shield wall or in an online search. If you lack these resources just ask I can pass it along to you if needed |

The 6th and 7th C may be a bit early for what you are chasing. No Vikings or Normans then. |

I have got the Europa Militaria Special issue on Vikings: link That contains 96 pages of full cover pictures of Viking re-enactors. Should give a good idea of how the re-enactors see the period clothing and equipment. Most of the re-enactors in the pictures do not look as "heroically scaled" as your average 28 mm figure these days, either. |

Thanks- lots of good suggestions! I went for the Osprey Viking, Saxon and Norman book, and the Europa Militaria Vikings in photos book- not bad for a grand total of about £12.00 GBP delivered! I've also had a good look through the photos of other people's painted figures, and the viking reenactors sites. Hopefully I'll strike the right balance between 'realism' (mostly grey, brown and covered in dirt and muck!) and something a bit more visually appealing, but not as garish as 'Asterix'! |
