For the earlier ECW period we hear that at Naseby the villagers went out on the morning of the battle and gathered in their animals, keeping them safely in the village out of harm's way … so you can make your choice: we can infer that there were animals in the fields as the armies approached … and can infer the fields were empty bar the soldiers when the battle was being fought.
