I'm painting Aventine steppe cavalry. I'd like some advice for highlighting Asiatic hair. I usually highlight Western hair w/ dark grey but I'm not sure if that would work on Orientals' hair. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

A pure blue-black hair color is very rare. Most black hair is a very dark brown. Try a black base with a thin burnt umber dry brush followed with minimal lighter highlights. |

I like to use GW Charadon Granite. It has a slight brownish tinge to it. |

Black and very dark grey works pretty well. |

Take a look at a person of asian descent with black hair and see how it highlights in real life… my experience is there are very few highlights unless under bright light, and then it goes from black to shiny white highlights with no transition. Also true of american indians (including Mexico and South America.) The best advice I can give on learning the proper colors to highlight with is to hang out in shopping malls and parking lots. Look at people. Paint what you see. |

For what it is worth: I know a lot of people hilight black hair with grey, however, the hilights on my black dog (a lab) are closer to blue then grey |

I would also recommend a very dark Blue. If you look at comic books or graphic novels they do this. Tony |

Yes the comic book approach is how I generally go. For example the classic color scheme for Batman's costume cowl and cape is blue with black shadows. There were high print quality comics where the colorist used black with gray highlights and I've never thought it looked right. So I generally do black with a dark blue like Prussian Blue or Payne's Gray then washed in black to shade the recesses. I've done it the opposite with black basecoat highlighted with the dark blue. For hair which is supposed to have a slight sheen, if my paint dried flat, I would be sure to add the sheen with a clear coat. Gloss varnish might be too much; a satin might be better. |
