I am working on an army based off of David Bishop's Fiends of the eastern Front: Operation Vampyr, and on page 125 he describes some Russian captured T-34s repainted in German colors. Anyone have any good suggestions for color schemes for these tanks that would have been repainted in "German Colors"? I am thinking that most German tanks at that time in that campaign were in Panzer Grey, but would that also mean the captured Russian ones as well? Any help is appreciated! Terry |

Yes, as far as I know Panzer grey was standard until the 3 colour came in from February 18th 1943. Some units in the desert and, possibly Russia, were experimenting with dark green wavy lines over the basic Panzer grey before this date, apparently. There is ample evidence for captured vehicles being painted in German colours, or occasionally left original with LARGE German symbols applied to avoid confusion! |

Yea, I've seen German crosses the size of the entire side of the turret painted on them, in white. |

Thanks guys, Maybe what I can do this being a very weird WWII type army is paint some panzer gray over the Russian green and add the black and white crosses that are described in the book. Again, being a Weird WWII type army I can take a little literary license, but was hoping for something finite and historical. Thanks again, Terry |

Thinking on the June 1941 part. Early July I think were the first encounters of the T34. just thiking. only 8 days left for June. now to be helpful. Early on Soviet kit was stocked. Not really needed this early on. Used later to fill gaps and for that matter there was a unit in Armee Gruppe Sud that was made up of Mostly captured Soviet Kit. Think used by Manstein around Kerch so not occurring in 1941. JH |

The important feature is indeed BIG crosses..and lots of them, on every surface |

Thanks for the additional info guys. Christot, that is a really good resource site, and it looks like a panzer gray T-34 would be the right way to go, and with plenty of crosses. Many thanks to all! Terry |

As above, panzer grey with big crosses. Until 1943, a tank painted green is going to be shot at by PAK gunners. |

I have the Tankograd book on the T-34 in German service by Jochen Vollert. 328 pages of captured T-34 heaven! Based upon which Soviet units the Germans encountered, and when, Vollert thinks that they would have met the T-34 within the first day or two of Barbarossa. As Bravo Two Zero points out though, there wasn't much of June 1941 left by then, and so it is unlikely that the T-34 was pressed into German service as early as that. No-one can say that they weren't, of course, but the earliest dated photograph in the book simply says Autumn 1941. The first official course to teach Germans to drive the T-34 wasn't held until October 1941. As for markings and colour, there is every possible size and position of Balkenkreuz imaginable, limited use of painted swastika, and don't dismiss the possibility of many T-34s remaining in their original Russian green. |

Again, many thanks to all, as this is all very helpful. My effort being a more fun project of a Weird WWII type set of armies, I am allowed some license, but still like to stay as historical as possible, but let the book be my primary guide. I am pretty comfortable with the T-34 in Panzer Gray, and lots of crosses, as described in the book, i.e. black and white ones. I may use a picture of one as my final guide and try to copy it though, but that will be the basic scheme. Again, many thanks all!!! Terry |

Wow! Thanks Overkill! Great photos there. The two in color were nice but hard to really tell what color the T-34 is – darn! Terry |
