I was wondering if Epic 40,000 games are dead? I have not seen any more games at my local shop and have not heard any one talking about it lately unlike some of GW's other discontinued lines. I wonder if I should try and put up my Epic Firepower books & Epic Magazines on the exchange board? |
Legion 4 | 25 Nov 2015 8:07 a.m. PST |
Nope … go to the Tac Cmd site … You may be able to sell those there ? link |
Mithmee | 25 Nov 2015 8:09 a.m. PST |
Plus there are other EPIC websites out there. But yes GW killed off EPIC nearly two decades ago. They have been going downhill since then. |
BaldLea | 25 Nov 2015 8:16 a.m. PST |
It looks like it will be re-released under the new Specialist Games banner. |
Legion 4 | 25 Nov 2015 8:33 a.m. PST |
But it probably won't be Epic40K rules. Probably the newest Epic: Armageddon rule system ? And rumor has it, may be 2-3 years ? But like everything with GW and Epic … it's a crap shot … |
javelin98 | 25 Nov 2015 10:14 a.m. PST |
Not to mention the prices will be epic, too! GW stuck a fork in Epic years ago; if they want to bring it back, they'll need to seriously reconsider their price point. |
Pictors Studio | 25 Nov 2015 10:27 a.m. PST |
I thought Epic was pretty cheap for GW games when I stuck my toe in. You got something like 100 figures for $20. USD It was more than 100 figures too because I did a whole Dark Angel company and had some marines left over. |
javelin98 | 25 Nov 2015 11:40 a.m. PST |
It was originally, but towards the end, the prices were ludicrous. A blister of three vehicles went from $10 USD to $22 USD literally overnight during the Great Price Revision of '09 (or whenever it was). Then the Chaos stuff came out and was priced almost on par with full-scope boxed games. A lot of us at the time opined that GW appeared to want to kill Specialist by making it unaffordable, then blaming the customers for not buying. GW has some fence-mending to do if they want SG to be viable again. |
Legion 4 | 25 Nov 2015 12:04 p.m. PST |
If and when GW Spec Games releases Epic, it will probably be costly. Their new Fantasy game, I forget the name, has not been doing so well. So I guess they are going to try to stir up some new sales with the re-release of old GW/SG games. Like Epic, Blood Bowl, Man'o War, etc. … So we will see … |
Mako11 | 25 Nov 2015 12:25 p.m. PST |
Yep, dead and buried for quite some time, though I suspect some people still play it. |
Legion 4 | 25 Nov 2015 12:53 p.m. PST |
Yes, most on the Tac Cmd site … |
Weasel | 25 Nov 2015 1:55 p.m. PST |
My impression is that the people playing Epic nowadays play either NetEpic or Epic Armageddon. |

I get in one or two games of Epic Armageddon each week, but no Epic 40K since EA came out. |
Andy Skinner | 25 Nov 2015 6:49 p.m. PST |
My impression is that the original question was about Epic in general. But I've recently re-brought out Epic 40,000 again, and am loving it. My favorite Epic game. Yes, I'm tweaking it all the time, but it tweaks well. andy |
Legion 4 | 26 Nov 2015 8:19 a.m. PST |
We started "tweaking" Epic also since '90 … |
Mister Tibbles | 26 Nov 2015 2:28 p.m. PST |
No need for GW miniatures. Tons of better and cheaper out there now. I really like the NetEpic rules. |
Legion 4 | 26 Nov 2015 7:46 p.m. PST |
I have been saying that for a long time. Not to mention some other good rule systems as well … |

Mithmee | 27 Nov 2015 6:35 p.m. PST |
You got something like 100 figures for $20 USD You will be lucky these days to get 20 figures for $20 USD if GW brought this back. Oh and not a big fan of Epic Armageddon though, just do not like blast markers. |
Legion 4 | 28 Nov 2015 9:28 a.m. PST |
Oh … yeah ! Like Weasel has just released a good set of rules for 6mm SF. What is the link to that ? |
Thomas Thomas | 03 Dec 2015 2:55 p.m. PST |
Is the version that people are still playing based on the original game (using order chits and essentially the same rules as Command Decision)? Or the latter yahtzee version? First version was easily GWs best game – though miniatures were a bit small. TomT |
Lion in the Stars | 03 Dec 2015 7:11 p.m. PST |
@Thomas: Space Marine was the first set of 6mm rules GW put out (and there was a second edition). Epic40k is the 3rd edition rules, and it's pretty much Yahtzee. Funny enough, the core engine got re-used for Battlefleet Gothic, and it works very well as a ships game. Epic:Armageddon is close to (but not the same as) the original Space Marine rules, and really plays pretty well. I spent some time helping on the Tau forces back in the day, but I kinda drifted away due to a lack of opponents. |
Capt Flash | 13 Dec 2015 10:59 a.m. PST |
And just how is Epic 40K Yahtzee? 😳😁 |
The Epic Gamer | 13 Dec 2015 7:08 p.m. PST |
Plenty of EA players in New England, I think we had 18 people for the tourney in June. Lots of pics here: link Only one E40k player that I know of though. |
Mithmee | 13 Dec 2015 9:08 p.m. PST |
Thing is every time that I see a EA battle the one thing that I do not see is an EPIC battle. But then I am use to seeing 10-12 Titans on the table top along with Infantry and vehicles. Oh and with me fielding 3-4 of them. You do not get that with EA. |
Capt Flash | 14 Dec 2015 4:46 p.m. PST |
That's true Mithmee. I don't dislike E:A; but I'm definitely partial Epic 40K |
Weasel | 14 Dec 2015 4:58 p.m. PST |
I think over time, the franchise drifted into "big 40K' more than being it's own distinct beast. |
Capt Flash | 14 Dec 2015 5:53 p.m. PST |
Ha! And 40K has quite definitely drifted into Epic Armageddon territory! |
Lion in the Stars | 14 Dec 2015 8:40 p.m. PST |
And just how is Epic 40K Yahtzee? 😳😁 Add up all the firepower points and use that to figure out how many dice to roll. The more 6s the better. I think over time, the franchise drifted into "big 40K' more than being it's own distinct beast. That's not a bad thing, is it? |
The Epic Gamer | 15 Dec 2015 10:58 a.m. PST |
10-12 titans on the table is possible with the AMTL, OBGM and ETC lists. Plus it's going to have a lot less abstraction than the same forces with E40k. |
Mithmee | 15 Dec 2015 5:19 p.m. PST |
Thing is that along with those 10-12 Titan per side there are also quite a bit of Infantry and Tank units. The group that I played with used to play 25000 – 30000 points per side. 4-6 Players per side. That was Epic what I see today from EA is not. |
