…over Syria?.

"It was only a matter of time before Tuesday's incident in which NATO member Turkey shot down a Russian-made warplane near the Syrian border.

The skies in and around Syria are increasingly used by multiple countries with conflicting interests in the years-long insurgency targeting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Immediate questions need to be raised about the likelihood of another such incident occurring in the future. Next time, it could involve the U.S. and Russia.

The opposing narratives of Tuesday's incident are instructive. The Turkish military claims it warned the Russian-made SU-24 warplane 10 times in five minutes that it was violating Turkish airspace. Russia claims it can prove its aircraft was flying over Syria…"

If A Russian jet shoots down a U.S. military plane over Syria (by a military jet or by a S-300 missile battery)…. the U.S. will probably retaliate using F-15s based in Turkey ….

"U.S. Is Ready To Wage Dog-Fights Against Russian Jets Over Syria."

This in turn will mean that U.S. forces and allied bases in the region are now targets for Russian military retaliation … and they will retailiate. In short …. such a conflict will quickly escalate. But the same question can be said about the other side … what happens if a U.S. jet shoots down a Russian jet. Same result …. an escalation where I have trouble seeing it stop.

jpattern225 Nov 2015 6:46 a.m. PST

Of course the response would be nothing.

If the US retaliated with a massive display of force, Deleted by Moderator

Result: The terrorists win!

Anyone implying that the correct response is immediate and lethal reaction is disturbed. Of course the correct response is diplomacy. Deleted by Moderator

If it's over Syria the Russians, acting as they are on behalf of the government, would be perfectly entitled to do so as they would be protecting Syrian sovereignty.

I don't see any post that says anything about a massive display of force or an immediate and lethal reaction.

Jpattern and Warwick- Nice to know you're here.

Note that Putin is not going to invade Turkey for shooting down his plane.

Doesn't matter who's in charge: We are not going to get in a fight with the Russkiye. Because that would be stupid.

To be clear, to target and shoot down a US military plane would clearly be no mistake. There are limited numbers of planes in the airspace, and this would clearly be a deliberate act.

That said…the response would be immediate and very restricted. If a missile battery was used, it would be targeted with an airstrike. If this were air to air combat, F-15's would be scrambled to remove the "hostile" from the airspace.

That is when the diplomats would step in and try to explain what happened, what mistakes were made, and if rebel forces were to blame.

Can't even remember what was deleted here. Unless I walk asleep not by me.

What would happen if the turks kill a Us or other non ( villain) Russian plane?
Nothing… My guess. Accident.

Absolutely no response is what would happen

Yes, the US may apologize to Russia at this point … huh?

Gennorm28 Nov 2015 12:52 p.m. PST

….and pay for the missile.

cwlinsj30 Nov 2015 11:21 a.m. PST

The USA has never made any immediate and aggressive response to hostile actions.

If the Russians "accidentally" shot down a US military aircraft, there would probably be an initial stand-down of US forces in the theatre followed by the announcement of emergency meetings with NATO, Arab allies, followed by the creation of a Blue Ribbon bipartisan Congressional Investigatory committee which would meet over several months to get to the bottom of this incident before releasing a classified report.
