Known by the name of Black Shuck – a name believed to derive from an old English word for black "demon", the 7-foot tall dog appeared as a bringer of death in many tales from 500 years ago. In the 16th century, the inhabitants of the British Isles were horrified by the brutal deaths committed by this giant hellhound with burning red eyes. link |

7-feet tall standing on its hind legs, granted that is still a huge dog. However I'll wait for a more dependable site to report the story. The next article I clicked on reported that the moon may be a hologram. |

Or it could be a large Irish or Scottish wolf hound. They get pretty big. |

It says it took archaeologists 500 years to uncover it! I know it is painstaking work but even so….. |

Canines that big used to be called "slaughter hounds" and although the breed has been extinct for centuries, people haven't forgotten them. |

Fun, fascinating article! Thanks for sharing. In my most recent FRPG I had my illusionist cast a spell over his three "ordinary" war hounds as they charged into some enemies that had managed to get into the village. The illusion turned what would look like "ordinary" dogs of this article's size into "hell hounds", with the whole red eyes and steaming breath and dripping fangs thing. Yes, I have this atavistic dread of huge dogs. Heh, as a small kid, Cu Chulainn I was not: a pair of dachshunds across the street terrified me for a whole summer. Once (I am an adult now), I took shelter from a sudden rain storm under the eve of a house. "Woof!" came this muffled sound, and turning I saw through a window the biggest dog I have ever seen, eyes and teeth on the other side of the glass. "Woof!" it said again and whirled away from the window out of sight. A few second later, around the corner of the house came the dog. More like the size of a small pony. He ran right up to my frozen body and my outstretched fingers disappear under his snoot. His eyes were even with my crotch (I am over six feet tall). "Woof?" he said, tail wagging, and turned and ran back around the corner. On quivering legs I walked out into the now-fading rain, glad to be alive. Just a puppy. What would I have done if he had been approaching with "intent"? I would not be here to write this…. |

A mate of ours used to bring his Irish wolfhound to the pub. You'd be standing at the bar and you'd suddenly feel a cold wet nose in the back of your neck. And it would still have all four feet on the floor. (However, if someone came into the bar with even a small terrier, the wolfie would promptly disappear under a table…) |
