I haven't decided on whether or not to buy SAGA as yet, as I have other suitable skirmish rules, but I bought a box of Gripping Beast Dark Age warriors that I'm planning on building as general unarmoured Saxon and Viking troops. Does SAGA distinguish between spears/axes/swords etc? I wanted to keep my options open before assembling the figures. Thanks! |

Nope. spears/axes/swords are treated the same. The two handed ax is the only hand weapon called out in the rules. |

Ran is absolutely correct. In fact, if you end up with somebody armed with a wooden club or a knife, they will be treated the same, also. Saga seems to differentiate on the basis of training/experience with perhaps some influence from kit, rather than distinguishing by weapon type. Grelber |

Thanks- I'll start building them up with a mix of weapons this evening! |

There are a couple more distinctions: Levy units can usually only take bows. For you, that means Viking and Anglo-Dane forces (the Anglo-Saxons who fought at Hastings). The proper Anglo-Saxon force in the expansion book can take levies with hand weapons instead if you want. Warriors should be modelled with shield and ordinary weapons for those armies. No options at all. [But Normans can take bow or crossbow-armed warriors, and there is a difference] Hearthguard can take ordinary weapons or Dane Axes. Note that even with a Dane Axe, the figure still has a shield, with either the axe or the shield slung at any given time. |

Many of the levy units also use slings so it's a good idea to make up a few of them. In a fight they'll perform exactly the same as others of their type, but they help to show that they are armed with missile weapons. |
