Could Perry's AWI French be used as Spanish? Are the uniforms similar in that time period? I'm not a button counter but I would want them to be close. Mark |

From memory, the main differences for the infantry are: 1) the Spanish had a "flat" or "falling" collar, whilst the French collar was a small, "stand up" version; 2) the Spanish coat was single-breasted and had no coloured lapels; and 3) Spanish centre companies (also known as fusiliers) had separate cross-belts for the bayonet and the cartridge box, instead of one combined one as the French had. Other than that, the uniforms worn by metropolitan Spanish troops in Europe tended to be more conventional; those worn by units serving in the Americas showed "field mods" and their colonial troops adopted quite a few "local" clothing styles. Rene Chartrand's Osprey MAA on Spanish troops in America (1700-1793) is worth getting, especially if you can compare it with his earlier MAA on French forces in the AWI. |
