All, thinking about starting a 15mm AWI set? Who makes the best figures?

bruntonboy21 Nov 2015 12:47 p.m. PST

Peter Pig, after saying that most of mine are actually Lancashire games who are also very nice but too big to mix.

The recent Blue Moon range isn't bad either.

Stone Mountain paint easy and are easy on the wallet. Blue Moon are also nice but the two ranges will not mix well. Peter Pig will mix with SM – and don't forget QRF. And watch for the return of Musket Miniatures, kissing cousins to SM. Hope for soon.

Polly Oliver are back in production and worth considering.

There are some reviews and comparisons on my hobby web site:

I have several units each of Old Glory, Polly Oliver, Stone Mountain, Lancashire – the old Frontier Miniatures fill out most of my armies.

Thanks!

I resisted the new fangled 18mm. I am very happy with true 15mm Peter Pig, Essex and Minifigs. All super and very compatible IMHO. Across the three, an incredible variety. Only a few types missing like the Burgoyne's Brit regulars and QR grenadiers.

There has been nothing new on the Polly Oliver website for over a year – anyone know why?

Essex have "Saratoga" British – infantry and artillery.

SM

I've wondered if they've not been selling well. I've not read anything on line about anybody working on them – I'm sure they are but after the fan-fare of the launch it's all gone very quiet.

Perhaps not enough PR? I wasn't aware they are back.

Just a reminder about AWI scenery.
PP makes a whole range including buildings, walls that would do for AWI or ACW. Plus a nice bridge. We use S and A scenery templates as they are robust and look great. Great deciduous trees can be bought from TABLESCAPE. We use them an awful lot, excellent. For roads I would recommend ADVENTURE TERRAIN'S clip together road system.

I just received some figures from Polly Oliver and I was very impressed with the service from the company. The figures turned up the day after I put in the order.

They are the first I have bought from the company and I was pleased with the quality of the infantry, which are beautifully proportioned and well posed. Size-wise they would be a perfect match for the current range of Minifigs.

I was less enthusiastic about the cavalry I bought. The riders were fine but the horses look like they were copied from a child's drawing. (Mind you, I think that is true of the horses produced by a lot of companies. Sculpting horses is an art and not many people seem to have mastered it).

However, I definitely will be buying more infantry. They really are as good as their fans always claimed (though I don't think the current owners are doing themselves any favours by failing to put pictures on the website)

Virginia Tory24 Nov 2015 1:09 p.m. PST

Blue Moon also does Saratoga infantry and artillery.

Consider going 25mm instead. Perfect conflict for it. Although it will leave more figs for me.

Thanks everyone

SJDonovan, thank you for sharing about your recent Polly Oliver purchase. I'm interested in their flags – from the web they look stunning.

SJDonovan25 Nov 2015 3:16 a.m. PST

Early morning writer, I hadn't noticed the flags but they do look very nice (though I may stick with GMB since I use them for my Napoleonics). One thing I neglected to mention about the Polly Oliver figures is that the alloy used seems to be quite soft and that this means that the muskets on some figures are a bit bendy. It is not a major problem and I don't have any breakages but if you like sturdy wargaming figures that will stand up to a lot of wear and tear they may not be for you.

SJDonovan25 Nov 2015 7:36 a.m. PST

I've discovered that there are more pictures of the figures on the Polly Oliver site than I had thought. You need to look on the blog to find them: meetpollyoliver.blogspot.co.uk

And those flags do look good.

Which range of figures best represents the early part of the war????

Supercilius Maximus01 Dec 2015 4:14 a.m. PST

@ SJD,

I get the impression you found PO easy to deal with, yes?

One of the things the new company was going to do was re-sculpt all the horses; they were definitely the range's Achilles Heel. I'm guessing they haven't got around to doing that yet (and possibly never will?).

Hi SM,

Yes I found Polly Oliver very easy to deal with, though I didn't have any direct communication as such, I just ordered from the website, paid by PayPal and the figures arrived very promptly. I only ordered a couple of packs just to check how they fit alongside Minifigs (and they work very well together).

I didn't know they had planned to re-sculpt the horses (though judging from the sample I saw it would definitely be a good idea). If I buy any more of their cavalry I will probably mount them on Minifig or Warrior horses because I've got quite a few spares lying around.

Redcoat 5501 Dec 2015 5:03 p.m. PST

I find Blue Moon really hard to beat. The sculpts are accurate and look realistic. They also blend well with Old Glory 15s which are not quite as nice but very plentiful.

My only complaint with Blue Moon is the mounted figures are kind of tiny compared to the foot men. This can usually be remedied by using Old Glory 15s for mounted troops.

Redcoat 5501 Dec 2015 5:05 p.m. PST

Nice layout History Gamer. What are you using for a gaming mat?

historygamer01 Dec 2015 6:14 p.m. PST

I like BM too. Same complaint about the horses though. Many/most of my figures are BM.

My ground cover is teddy bear fur repeatedly spray painted lightly with different colors. Funny how some of the colors come out in the pictures as to the eye they look like something else.

Thanks for the compliment.:-)

Redcoat 5501 Dec 2015 11:56 p.m. PST

What color of Teddy Bear fur did you start out with?

historygamer02 Dec 2015 4:28 a.m. PST

I think it was honey brown.
