I have enough figures to create two units of Austrian SYW dragoons. What are your suggestions as to which units to paint ( I know about Kronoskaf for uniform reference material) & why? |

"Savoyen" (DR9 Aspremont-Linden). Unique combination of red with black and historical connection with Prinz Eugen: "From 1736, contrarily to the other regiments of the Austrian Army who were known by the name of their owner, this regiment kept the name of the illustrious general who owned it from 1683 to 1736: Eugen Franz Prinz Savoyen. (Kronoskaf). (DR Althann): unique in its white uniform. |

Using Duffy's information, consider two really great dragoon regiments: D 31 – DeLigne in 1757, through Benedict Daun; Lowenstein; StIgnon in 1759. Netherlands national regiment. Light green coat with red cuffs, lapels, turnbacks and vest. Straw Breeches. Famous for its charge at Kolin. Captured the silver drums of the famous Prussian super-large Bayreuth Dragoons in 1758. Hochkirh; Kunersforf supporting the Russians; Maxen. Converted to light dragoons in 1760, almost wiped out in the Prussian approach march to Torgau. Restored, went on to serve at Adelsbach, Burkersdorf, Reichenbach. "An eventful career!" D 37 – Kolowrat: Dark blue coat, red cuffs, turnbacks, lapels, vest and breeches. Kolin; Breslau; Leuthen. Captured the silver drums of Prussian Jung-Platen dragoons at Hochkirch. With the Rusians at Kunersdorf. Landeshut. Captured 10 Prussian colours at Liegnitz. "One of Austria's most effective regiments of horse." Years ago, I was building a 15-18mm "Western" army for the 7 years War with minifigs, Freikorps, Frontier, and other figures, and then discovered Old Glory 15's. I painted the Hanoverian dragoon regiment in white coats, red cuffs and turnbscks, and use them freely today as Dragoon regiment Althann in my Austrian & French vs Prussian Old Glory 15's army. Always like units that can do "double duty!" The "best" of the red coated Austrian dragoon regiments may have been D 19, Hesse-darmstadt. Red coat, light green cuffs and turnbacks. No lapels. Light buff vest edged light green (forget it in 18mm!) and light buff breeches. Distinguished at Kolin; Moys; Breslau; Leuthen; Hochkirch; Torgau; Burkersdorf. GdeP

I've had three different 28mm Austrian armies and every one of them has the de Ligne Dragoons because I like the color combination of green coats, red facings and straw breeches. All the other recommendations so far are good. I also like the Sachsen Gotha regiment with red coat and light blue facings. |

I like the Sachsen Gotha and also the Prinz Savoyen – red coats and black facings |

Kolowrat have a very nice flag, and Wurtemberg have a nice combination of uniform colours. These are my two favourites out of the seven I chose to do; but then, I've chosen to do Althann, even though it didn't fight in many big battles, because it was the only one to fight in white coats.

Thank you for your recommendations, gentlemen. One quick question: Kronoskaf says the Jung-Modena regiment's grenadiers wore mitres: link If I chose these, it would be a conversion. Are the mitres the same as Prussian grenadiers? |

Actually guys, re: mitres I found this: TMP link So unless anyone has anything new to add? At any rate, thanks for your thoughts. I definitely go with the Savoyen & then probably a blue-coated regiment. |

Re the Jung-Modena Grenadiers wearing mitres- this was the case in the 1730s but I don't think this carried on into the SYW. In 1734-5 during the Rhine campaign the regiment, then known as Khevenhuller, was shown wearing mitres by an eyewitness artist. I've never seen a later reference than this, and as the caps bore Khevenhuller coats of arms etc, I doubt they would have survived the change of Colonel, or the tendency to regularise Austrian uniforms (at least a bit) before the SYW. My choice for an extra Dragoon Regt would be Kohary/Althann- the only white coated Dragoon regt in the SYW. |
