Shields and artwork – I always have the thought that Peltasts were lesser troops and therefore miss out on the lurid shield designs we see elsewhere, or would i be doing myself a disservice of plane white of other dull color shields. |

The attitude toward the "light" troops and cavalry all began to change during the Peloponnesian War. The notion that the skirmisher was a ship rower or from the landless poor class, began to change when both Sparta and Athens began to employ Thracian mercenaries. By the end of the war, the "light" troops had become an essential part of any Greek army. |

Since they seem to have followed their individual taste, you could go with relatively dull shields on some (to speed up the painting rate) and mix in a proportion with more complex designs. I do something similar with my Celts, I just don't have the patience to give every shield the full treatment! |

Paint is pretty cheap, even in ancient times. Sometimes there's a lot of boredom on campaigns. I'd guess unless someone is preventing you from painting your shield, you probably paint or shield. Or your friend who likes to paint begs you to let him paint your shield, because he's bored. |
