Can anyone tell me what color or colors were used for the wooden carriages of the heavy artillery pieces used in forts like Donelson or Henry? I know the field artillery used Olive Green but from the few pics I've seen of the fort guns it kinda looks like plain wood, but I would suspect they would be painted to preserve the wood if nothing else. Thanks in advance. |

According to the 1860 US Ordnance Manual, the same Olive Green as field guns. And the Confederacy followed suit. |

Second this. All my ACW artillery books say/show the same green as field artillery. |

The olive green was created through a mixture of Ochre Yellow and Lampblack, along with various oils and turpentine. Since you couldn't go to the Dover Home Depot and pick up a couple of gallons, most paints were mixed in the field. Depending on the mixture, you could end up with anything from a dark olive to a greenish mustard. |

TA miniatures appears to paint its heavy casemate artillery a different colour green, almost a light pea green. I have also seen pictures of actual or reproduction guns in this same colour. Would these be naval guns and therefore a different green or just a different interpretation of Olive Green? I have some pictures on my blog to illustrate the point. link

Looks like just a different interpretation to me. See Extrabio1947 above. |

Yes, I agree. As I noted in an update on my Blog, I decided upon Plaid Delta 2095 Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint "English Yew Green" at the recommendation of Frank Patterson. |
