Can anyone tell me what color or colors were used for the wooden carriages of the heavy artillery pieces used in forts like Donelson or Henry?

I know the field artillery used Olive Green but from the few pics I've seen of the fort guns it kinda looks like plain wood, but I would suspect they would be painted to preserve the wood if nothing else.

Thanks in advance.

According to the 1860 US Ordnance Manual, the same Olive Green as field guns. And the Confederacy followed suit.

Second this.

All my ACW artillery books say/show the same green as field artillery.

The olive green was created through a mixture of Ochre Yellow and Lampblack, along with various oils and turpentine. Since you couldn't go to the Dover Home Depot and pick up a couple of gallons, most paints were mixed in the field. Depending on the mixture, you could end up with anything from a dark olive to a greenish mustard.

TA miniatures appears to paint its heavy casemate artillery a different colour green, almost a light pea green. I have also seen pictures of actual or reproduction guns in this same colour. Would these be naval guns and therefore a different green or just a different interpretation of Olive Green? I have some pictures on my blog to illustrate the point.

Looks like just a different interpretation to me.

See Extrabio1947 above.

Yes, I agree. As I noted in an update on my Blog, I decided upon Plaid Delta 2095 Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint "English Yew Green" at the recommendation of Frank Patterson.
