So,do you have a time of the year when you shut down buying more hobby "stuff" for a period of time?

It's approaching for me… I stop buying at shops, on-line, Evil-Bay, etc., around this week each year and then continue the "fasting" until after New Year Day.

This year it was reinforced because my wife announced she intends to order some miniatures, rules or terrain goods from a list I supply annually. She has done this before (not every year does it happen.)

Since I have done some serious amount of "prep work" for painting this past four weeks the buying dearth will be especially less missed this season than during other times of the year.

I had a similar question, Do you buy more stuff getting ready for a convention, during the convention in a dealers room, or after a convention because of all the ideas you got at the show?

Do you buy more stuff getting ready for a convention, during the convention in a dealers room, or after a convention because of all the ideas you got at the show?

So far I have stuck to local Cons only (Saint Louis, MO region) and a regional con – DieCon across the river in Illinois.

Before, no – either getting ready to run a game or focused on what I will be playing at the con with friends.

During – used to but not too many vendors carrying the specific 3mm/6mm/15-18mm figures I am currently interested in. So, not during a convention.

After – no, I am getting back to the basic priorities and expenses of my war game armies.

I used to shut down my hobby buying in September. Now I continue buying but I set the items aside for my wife to hold until after the holidays. If anyone is looking for a present for me, they buy it off my wife. Whatever is left she gives me.

I usually shut most of my hobby activities down during November. I either go on vacation or, as with this year, I attend continuing education seminars to be able to renew my massage therapy license.

As to the other question, I do tend to spend more when preparing to run a game at a convention.

There was me thinking this might be a thread about converting stuff from Mantic's Deadzone for 15mm usage…

On topic. Personally; buy, buy buy. Never stop. Never surrender.

Lion in the Stars18 Nov 2015 1:09 p.m. PST

Since most of my "presents" during the holidays aren't minis or even minis-related, I never stop buying.

I don't have a specific time of the year. However, I tend to emphasize one hobby over another at certain times. When I'm in a bass playing/performing/repairing phase, I'll usually deliberately stop looking at miniature marketplace and related forums and visa versa.

I'll usually keep doing some wargaming projects, but it's a nice excuse to not buy things for a while. For example, my brother and I just started a music project and though I've compleated a number of terrain projects, I've bought virtually no wargaming stuff in several months.

For the respondents, thanks. It was interesting to see the range of answers to the OP.

Bill N, nice technique I might want run that by the wife for coordination. She always wants the personal touch in gift giving.

Jimboa, I didn't even think about that – after the fact I can see why you might anticipate that. I don't even know what Mantic's DeadZone is/did cover but had I remembered such existed I would have titled differently.

Um, I see Bill removed cross-posts all the boards that are my personal interests- which I acknowledge is his call.

Did I break a rule [if so, for once, it wasn't knowingly] or did someone whine… I mean… complain? I figured it was easier (less time consuming) than posting similar but era/genre specific versions of the same question.

Edit: Next time when I post multiple subject specific versions of the same general post to my favorite boards I don't expect to be told I should cross-post, Bill. Can't have it both ways…
