"In light of recent events, we felt it appropriate to post this 1907 film rendition of the French national anthem once again. La Marseillaise from 1907 is an fantastic and charming example of early synchronized sound. Unlike those films from the 1920's which used sound-on-film processes, a separate gramophone record would be played alongside La Marseillaise to give the illusion that the revolutionary gentleman was singing…" link Hope you enjoy! To sing the Marseillaise properly, you must be from Marseille: YouTube link YouTube link (starting from ca. 1:00) But I like the authentic gestures and facial expressions in the clip Armand was reposting. |

Tango01 I made a post offering our concern, support and compassion for our French members and the people of France. However, Bill removed it to the Ultramodern board and claimed that someone complained that my post had nothing to do with the Napoleonic period. When I complained he said that members see this site as a refuge from the news? This is despite the fact that the Ultramodern board have been discussing 'todays news' and my post had nothing to do with wargaming at all, for any period anyway. It was to show my concern, support and compassion for our French members and the people of France and I was in the belief that other members might feel the same. It seems I might have been wrong? |

Der Alte Fritz Many thanks. I knew that many members do care, especially those attending the Napoleonic boards. Perhaps if enough members said it was okay for my post to be in the Napoleonic boards, where I post myself, and not in the Ultramodern boards where I do not post and don't know anyone, I wonder if Bill might consider transferring it back? |

I don't agreee with you, Gazzola. I dare say that everybody partaking in this forum shares your opinion that terrorist attacks are to be condemned. What is the point on stating it explicitely ? And this is – and I am happy about it – a forum on Napoleonics, not on modern politics. Bill is right to keep different topics separated. But actually, it doesn't matter whether such a solidarity posting is made here or there or everywhere or not. Those murdered are dead. No offence intended. If you feel better by expressing your feelings, continue to try convincing Bill. In the light of the postings agreeing with you, I just didn't want to have points of view neglected which are different from yours. Oli |

Was whistling this today, maybe from the news this morning but do break out on la Marseille from time to time. I think Gaz was ok, I for one try not to go near the modern boards and this is the place I go to to forget the world but not the concerns of our fellows. |

Oliver Schmidt My post was not a topic of modern politics. I did not state anything concerning the actual terrorists attacks, other than they were horrific events. That was not the purpose. I did not post it to spark a discussion or debate. As I said before, I made the post to show my concern, support and compassion towards our French members and the people of France. Nothing more. I did not post it in the Ultramoderns because I do not post there. And no one else had to make a post or show their support and compassion. It was not compulsory. Not every member on other sites, such as the Napoleon Series, added posts to those who showed their compassion to a similar post. But I would have thought a bit of leniency could have been employed here, considering the circumstances, as it was on other websites. I am just stunned, if not shocked by whoever felt compelled to complain that my post was not about Napoleonic wargaming! Do they not have any compassion? Did it disrupt any Napoleonic or wargaming topics or debates to any extent? But I won't push it with Bill. I am just disappointed by whoever felt the sad need to complain about my post, considering the circumstances and hope it was not just a way of getting at me because I made the post. That would be sick. |
Gazzola | 19 Nov 2015 5:49 a.m. PST |
For those of us who do not post in the Ultramodern threads, there is a thread titled 'Paris under attack', where I am pleased to see so many members offering their support and compassion. That was the intention of my post. |

I think there has to be a certain level of ruthlessness by the moderator to keep threads on topic, otherwise they are inundated with posts that require moderation and argument about how important the subject is. The simple truth is that however horrifying the events were, they don't fall under the subject of this board. I can't imagine how hard it is to moderate boards like these, but try to keep it easy as possible on them lest they decide it isn't worth it and quit. |

Tango01 It was a very comforting and reassuring post. However, I would not have been aware of it or that it had even been made because I never post in the Ultramoderns. My support post was for the French members of this site who attend the Napoleonic boards, and of course, the people of France. That is because I only post here, apart from the odd Ancient and Medieval post. Apparently my post offended some people, although how they could be offended by a post offering support and compassion beats me? |
Gazzola | 19 Nov 2015 4:36 p.m. PST |
Murvihill I understand that and would have no objection had my post asked for debate, discussion or comments on the horrific modern day events. But as I keep saying, it was a post of concern, support and compassion, nothing more. I wasn't looking for replies or debate. I am really baffled as to what sort of mind could possibly be offended by such a post? That makes me feel it may have been more personal and I guess some sad souls would stoop so low. But at least I know there are members who were not offended by the post. That is also reassuring. Time to move on, I guess. |

Dear all, I see this post is now a little bit calmer. I dedicated too a little homage to the French, to France and to the Marseillaise, connecting the French Hymn the Napoleon Period and wargame. Here the attack of 2 coys of the 10th French regiment on the village of Pratzen, defended by some units of the Russian Novgorod Regiment the 2nd December 1805 YouTube link |

Casablanca…my all time favorite movie watching that clip always make me tear up. Madeleine Lebeau (Yvonne) was a French girl in her early 20s who got out of France just ahead of the occupation. When this movie was made, she had no idea if she would ever get to go home again. Listening to the way she sings it, I don't think she was acting in that scene. link |
