Hi all, I was wondering if any of you gentlemen could tell me if Crusader SYW minitures and Front Rank are of a compatable size, not in the same unit but in the same army. Thanks in advance for any help, Dave.

Front Rank are an old range with few infantry variations. Crusader are more recent and have variations. I tend to use Crusader more for the rank and file but because they are very similar in height, I mix in Front Rank command. But in terms of cavalry, I much prefer the solid horses from FR.
I have many posts here showing both ranges together

Hi de ligne, thanks very much for your feed back, also congratulations on a excellent blog, very nicly done. I notice that you're from France, may I take this oppotunity to offer my sincere condolences to you for the horror that happened last week in Paris. All the best, Dave.

Front Rank fit in OK (in an army) with Crusader and Foundry. Most Front Rank and Foundry are OK in the same unit – especially if mixing in officer types, etc.

I know you didn't ask about Foundry, but I think they should be considered, especially if you plan on Prussian and Russian and want easy painting.

Front Rank French, Austrians and British are their best SYW ranges. The Russians and Prussians look a bit old these days. All FR come with full equipment.

For Russian infantry I'd use Foundry in red small clothes (not green coats) – great variation and very easy to paint, the ones in blue rain cloaks are even easier to paint.

Watch out for their dragoon packs, as some are painted (catalogue) as wearing coats when they are sculpted in small clothes. The Foundry Prussian dragoon drummer is also just wrong (IMHO).

They also do most of their Prussian infantry having piled their packs somewhere (which I like) and makes them easy to paint. Their infantry comes with and without lapels, which is very useful.

Front Rank do good discounts on larger orders which always swings a few votes. I deal with FR a lot, directly and with clients, and they are a very good company to deal with.

I don't know that much about Crusader to deal with. I like their Austrian infantry an awful lot but found their cavalry a bit wooden looking. I'd also have a good look at their horses in comparison to FR and Foundry. Sold what I had. From memory their Austrians and Prussians come with full equipment – don't know about the others.

Foundry did a good army deal (22 packs for 16) a while ago. I'd avoid their Brits.

I use them both in separate units in my SYW armies.

" I'd avoid their Brits". Unless you like your figures with fat fingers and funny faces.

Get Crusader thru North Star often some sort of deal available & good service.

Front Rank are always very good.

That and they are built like Arnold Swarzenegger, some of them even look like him – see Grenadiers.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. My SYW project is still in its infancy, I am a very slow painter which is just as well as I can't afford to buy large numbers of 28mm figures on a regular basis. My main project at the moment is WSS using the fantastic figures produced by EBOR miniatures, I love this size of 28mil figure and only wish he made SYW. I started the SYW project as a bit of a side show and to give me a break from WSS, so far I only have two Austrian line regiments and a Hungarian grenadier regiment. James Roach in my opinion you are a Demi God, I do not know anyone who paints as well or as fast as you, I saw your Prussian vs Russian game at triples a couple of years ago and it looked fantastic, you were using Piquet rules with home grown amendments which I wanted to speak to you about, you were engaged in conversation with another chap however and the person I was with was being a dick so I never got to speak to you. I may end up buying some Foundry cavalry if I can manage to get a good price from the Devil for my soul, because as you say Crusader cav are a little wooden. Anyway thanks again to all for feedback, all the best, Dave.

Demi? Demi? The only Demi worth having has Moore as her second name!

Hi Dave, go to my blog, my email address is in the side bar, and drop me an email about the rules.
