With the up coming release of Team Yankee and finding my dusty old copy of Red Storm Rising I figure its time to dip my toes in the Cold War setting. Growing up as a 3rd LAAM BN brat in the stated time period it'd only be right if I tried to put together a USMC force. So I have a few questions on equipment. About when were the Marines issued M1 Abrams? From what I understand they didn't get them at the same time as the Army. So would my best bet be to find some M60s? I have some Bradley IFVs from a Desert Storm project from a few years ago so same question as above. Is this was too new of a piece of equipment to be found in the USMC arsenal? If so should I be looking into LVTP-7 or would that only be used with expeditionary forces? And the last question for now would be does any make Hawk batteries in 15mm or 6mm scale? I have been looking around for a time and actually can't find Hawks in any gaming scale which is funny for a platform used as long as it was. Thanks in advance Majors WotWot |

The Bradley IFV is not part of the USMC arsenal. M1 tanks were not introduced into the USMC unitl after the Gulf War (90s) For vehicles your best bet would be the AAV and the M60 tank. Irish serb and QRF make an AAV. link link QRF makes a M60. Khurasan previewed a M60, but its release has been delayed. There is speculation that Battlefront will make one in time if Team Yankee is successful. In Red Storm rising the retaking of Ireland by Marine forces was always a great part of the book. Good luck. |

For the Gulf War (1990-1991) The 2nd and 4th Tank Battalions (USMC) were outfitted with the M-1. Some were Army tanks and some were tanks originally designated for the USMC but due to the war delivery was accelerated. IFV would be the LAV's. A battalion per division. Light scouting and armored battalion. Marines back then used the AAV and supply trucks modified. In one operation, I rode in the back of a heavy lift dump truck driven by Seabees. Our Hummers, only a few were armored, if what we had could be called armored. They were usually in weapons plts and companies. |

I think the H&R HAWK is on a vehicle though, and not the much more common, trailer mounted one. I'm not aware of anyone producing those in either scale. |

i elected to do my c1980 USMC in 20mm in anticipation of the forthcoming TooFatLardies Cold War rules. 20mm (1/72) so I could use cheap plastics, kits and pre-builds. Armour is M60A3 without ERA, transport is AAV (prebuilds) and I have sourced CH46 and a Sea Cobra for air assets. Figures are the Revell 'Modern US Infantry' the initial build (more M60 to come) is here:

Thanks for the info everyone. I had forgotten all about the LAVs. I believe I saw some at QRF, hopefully I can source some at scalecreep as well as the AAV and M60 in the near future. It is a shame about not being able to find any Hawks, and yeah I was hoping for the trailer mounted one. I like your force there Khusrau. I do some Napoleonic stuff in 1/72 plastic, never thought of doing anything modern with that scale. Another thing I never thought of was being air mobile. Gives you more flexibility I imagine. With TY being pushed back I have plenty of time to kick around force composition and homebrew stat ideas Not to mention painting which I'm terrible at. So a few new questions come to mind, first off for air support should I go with Marine harriers and f18s or would carrier based navy planes work as well? For painting purposes do I want to go forest green or camo for the vehicles? Majors WotWot |

The U.S. Marines retook Iceland in the book Red Storm Rising, Ireland was not taken by the WP. |

For painting purposes do I want to go forest green or camo for the vehicles? The USMC used the "MERDEC" paint schemes in the era you're talking about. If you're talking Iceland/Europe they'd be out of Lejeune/2nd MarDiv, and painted in "Winter Verdant" (used year-round, even at Camp Pendleton in California):
Or, if it is winter, they might redo it in "Snow/Trees," like this:
