The belt-buckle rider chap was the main source for my Early Sarmatian Horse-archer in "Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars". It's questionable how correct it is to describe the figures on the Bosporan murals as "Sarmatian", of course, as opposed to Bosporan Greek. The stele of Tryphon son of Andromenes from Tanais is another excellent example – link – Greek name, Greek inscription, Sarmatian equipment. |

Is there a specific source for 83. Rhoxolani Cavalryman? Thanks for the stele of Tryphon. Perhaps Tryphon may even be the descendant of a Hellenized Sarmatian? It would be difficult to tell the difference between a Sarmatianized Taurian, Skythian or Greek and a Sarmatian immigrant to the Bosporan Kingdom. Druzhina Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers |

No, he's just taken from the Strabo passage – "they use helmets and corselets made of raw ox-hides, carry wicker shields, and have for weapons spears, bow, and sword". I think I'd handle them a bit differently now. |
