Would anyone care to express any opinions on Zulu Dawn and Khartoum? I usually enjoy Charlton Heston's movies but have never seen Kahrtoum and only saw Zulu Dawn once when it was first released. Thanks in advance for any comments anyone would care to make. John Miller

5 is difficult but…

Zulu
Carry On Up The Khyber
55 Days at Peking
The Man Who Would Be King
Khartoum OR Zulu Dawn

Keifer11308 Jan 2016 2:51 a.m. PST

Just rewatched Zulu Dawn. Of course, it is Hollywoodized and….well…it doesn't do a good job of explaining some of the mistakes made. It tries to blame the Quartermaster for not getting ammunition to the troops, but never actually shows troops running out of ammo and the consequences. They also don't explain Zulu tactics, and how the camp became enveloped by the bull horns of the Zulu advance. But for a fun beer and pretzels movie, its ok.

Khartoum is more talk, less action, but is a really good movie. Well worth seeing.

Zulu Dawn also had lancers present in the first invasion,a major flub, since lack of regular cavalry was at least partly responsible for the ensuing fiasco. But as Ian Knight said in his review, much can be forgiven in the face of those Zulu charges!

Keifer113 & Hafen von Schlockenberg: Thanks for your responses!! Guess I'll go for Zulu Dawn. Thanks, John Miller

Two movies by late South African director David Millin are available in full on Youtube:

Majuba (1968). Despite the title it actually features all three main actions of the First Boer War of 1881, so Bronkhorst Spruit and Laing's Nek are in there too. It's mostly in Afrikaans, and has a flimsy plot, so I'd advise just watching the battle scenes – which are quite well staged. A couple of peculiarities are the helmets worn by the British: actually the distinctive South African pattern, and the Boers are armed mostly with Martini-Henrys, as opposed to the more historically accurate Westley-Richards and Winchesters.

Shangani Patrol (1970). Filmed in Zimbabwe (still Rhodesia at the time), it recounts the story of the famous last stand from the First Matabele War of 1893. This one's in English, and has a more interesting plot, so might be worth viewing in full. The battle scenes are again well staged, and the maxim gun looks accurate (in both senses of the word!).

This is back again? Then +1 Utu,a movie seen by far too few gamers.
