I'd never been to this show before, saving my money and gaming privileges usually for SELWG. However, as it's only 40 minutes away from where I live I took advantage of the close proximity. I also took my eldest son, age 7, to his first wargame show.

First off, I think it's a really nice show. I like the separate trading and gaming halls. The FoW tournament squash court behind a glass wall looked intimidating, like a high stakes poker invitational event.

We got in 5 games and everyone was very friendly, encouraging and patient in giving my son either advice or time to make up his mind about what he was going to do in a turn. It was also nice to see that the interest and attendance in the gaming hall didn't drop off drastically after lunch with some participation games being run right up to closing time. Post lunch, the trade area saw fewer customers so it was easier to get around and talk with traders I've met many times before.

So we really enjoyed it…head to head, my son and I played 5 games, 3 wins to him, 1 win to me with 1 tie. He wants to go back next year.

Well done the Wargames Association of Reading and to all those clubs who put on good games.

Going in the afternoon this year (I normally go first thing) was a much nicer experience – less of a scrum around the trade stands.
And the bring-and-buy layout in the centre of the room worked much better than previous recollections – albeit still always very busy!

Separate gaming and trading halls sounds like a great idea!
