Looking at the preview on Breakthrough Assault, it is clear that the "hit the turret or the hull" rule is still in force. Since I'm going to be playing in 6mm, it's a real problem: mobile turrets on M1s aren't so hard, but T-72s are pushing it, and ITVs are ridiculous. Has anyone had success with rotating turrets on 6mm tanks? Would love to hear your techniques or warnings.

I'm not sure I understand the question.

All of my turrets for WWII and the Modern period are rotatable.

I recommend asking players not to grasp/touch them by the barrels when turning, but to put a single index finger/thumb on each side of the turret in order to spin them.

Works great.

If you are talking of rotating turrets that stay in place (drop a 6mm turret on a carpet and you might as well just give up on looking for it) then I use toilette bowl wax (use a CLEAN one of course…). A single ring will be plenty for many thousands of tanks. Use a toothpick to scoop some out of the ring and place it on the bottom of the turret.

Something like so, available at any hardware store.

Yes. I was using H&R for moderns. The shaft for the turret was usually long enough, all I had to do was insert it into the hull then splint the end of the shaft with a craft knife.
It does mean the turrets can come off if you want to use that to show kills.

Cool hack using readily available materials with minimal effort. Thank you Dynaman8789. Very clever!

A friend of mine uses a dot of 3M blue tacky, a low adhesive, and is pleased with his solution. The turrets can move without falling off their hulls.

Personally, I glue my small turrets (i.e. APCs) and allow the tank turrets to float freely. You just have to be careful about losing them. I'll probably try the blue tacky one day.

I used super small rare earth magnets on my GHQ ones. You just have to make sure they're nice and flush.

What size rare earth magnets would you use for 6mm tank turrets?
What size would you use for 15mm tank turrets?

Would a marker showing turret direction work? similar to the old Advance Squad Leader tokens.

I use 3mm diameter for my 15mm tank turrets, often with just a steel washer or something in the hull. Works fine for plastic; my big resin and metal Konigstiger needs a magnet in the hull too. These magnets are 1mm thick discs.

Since my 6mm project is only conceivably for home games, I think I'm just going to house rule that the whole tank rotates for free, and glue the turrets on.

Thanks for all the great ideas though!

I drill a small hole into the turret stub, and insert a piece of paper clip. I then mount a magnet in the hull.

I used to glue all turrets down, about 25 years ago I made a change. Large tanks for micro armor (1/285, 6mm) such as Abrams, Leopard 2, LeClerc, I quit gluing the turrets. Some T-80 are glued and others are not. All APC/AIFV are glued along with AA.
Maybe this will help.

Glue a pin into the turret through the hull.
