The painting is nice, but I have my doubts about whether the unit was at Stono Ferry and Savannah. There were two different units that went by the name Trumbach. |

The unit pictured was the IR von Trumbach only until 1778, when it became IR von Bose; it would have been referred to by the latter title at the time of Stono Ferry and Savannah. The Hessian unit at Stono Ferry was the second unit to be called "von Trumbach" and had formerly been the Grenadier Regt Rall until its capture at Trenton, then IR von Woellwarth 1777-78. This unit and the Garrison Regt von Wissenbach (which became von Knoblauch in 1780) were the Hesse Cassel troops at Savannah, and later part of the garrison of Charleston, SC until its evacuation. IR von Bose was the unit that accompanied Phillips to Virginia, then served under Cornwallis fighting at Green Spring, Guilford CH, and Yorktown. |
