On this document, link Nafziger notes this unit serving as part of the Magdeburg garrison in September 1813:

4th Magdeburg Demi-Brigade
1st Battalion (25/553)
2nd Battalion (14/682)
3rd Battalion (13/830)

I can't find another reference to this unit. Any ideas? Was it, maybe, a collection of battalions or men otherwise separated from their parent units, and assembled to serve in the garrison?

Thanks in advance!

Maybe it is one of the demi-brigades created in February 1813:

Oliver, thank you – I was hoping you'd see my post. I hadn't thought of searching the internet with "4e" or "4eme" instead of "4th."

My initial thought was that this unit was something like the "Erfurt Battalions"; Nafziger has reference to them here: PDF link on page 15, and there's some discussion about them here: link That last reference notes the Erfurt Battalions were, according to Digby Smith, 'formed from stragglers and convalescents in the French depot in Erfurt'.

So again, that was my guess for the 4th Magdeburg demi-brigade. The only other possible hint I have is here: link Specifically, see the reference to "5 bataillons d'isoles" formed at Magdeburg as of July 24, 1813 – could some of those battalions be components of the 4th Magdeburg demi-brigade?

Seems to be difficult to find out more:

Here Vandamme's troops gathering in Magdeburg (but these don't form the garrison) after 18 June 1813:

And here the order of 24th July 1813:

About the garrison of Magdeburg in August 1813:

And a letter of 17 November 1813, which lists 12 regiments (all of the 2e corps) whose 4th battalions are supposed to be in Magdeburg:

The presence of these 12 batallions in Magdeburg is confirmed here, in a letter of 28 November 1813:

Oliver, that August 1813 document is extremely interesting – my French is terrible, but if I read that correctly, it explains that some of the "bataillons d'isoles" or "bataillons de marche" are to be used in the defense of Magdeburg. Without evidence to the contrary, I suspect that's the basis for the 4th Magdeburg Demi-Brigade, especially since Nafziger's listing for the demi-brigade doesn't tie its component battalions back to other existing, numbered regiments.

Thanks for these links – I bookmarked a couple of them. I really appreciate your help!
