Very interesting, I wonder if whether going to a scale of 1 hex = 4" on a slightly smaller table would make those ranges feel more natural to you?. Thanks for posting, there is a lot of work there. |

That was a good write up. I have been playing the old battle cry, first edition as a miniature game for about 10 years now. I do have a grid that we use to help with calculate ranges, so it's not quite like your game. I also split the sections out and each section gets the same cards. So the left flank would have all the left flank cards. I add in the special cards to each deck and then, each deck is shuffled. I allow 3 cards to be in a player's hand with remaining cards becoming their draw pile. After a card is played then a new one is drawn. My set up is 28mm so I think your ranges would work for me. Norm – not a bad idea. The table size was my full 6x8, which was probably a bit much for a division on each side. Even on the board game the musket range seems long to me, but what else can you do if adjacent hexes is melee, two hexes has to be musket fire, right? Using 4" would mean musket fire is 8" max, and if I kept melee as base-to-base contact, that might work, though that might shorten the artillery ranges too much (20" max for foot battery seems too short). I prefer not to change too much – simple is better. I might keep things at 6" for musket fire and base-to-base for melee, and if that doesn't work, shorten it to 4 and see what happens. I think melee should be at 4" (or 6" if you are choosing that) or closer – while that might seem counter-intuitive to normal figure play, a conversion of hexes to inches does in effect do that, as there is no such thing as base-to-base contact in C&C. I would suggest a strict conversion, so 6" or less = 1 hex, over 6" but under 12 inch is two hex etc. (probably doing 4" conversion might make that visually more acceptable). So if your units are at 6" or less – then they are in melee … it is a correct conversion, but I agree it might look strange on a gridless table and take a bit of getting used to. |
