The gray looks a little light for early war but the red lettering in "DELETED" seems to stand out well as a contrast. What scale is it anyway?!?

Piquet Rules11 Nov 2015 6:38 p.m. PST

I don't think DELETED is in the correct font for that year and vehicle.

wrgmr111 Nov 2015 7:00 p.m. PST

I detect a small amount of battle damage on the DELETED.
Great weathering on the gray.

McWong7312 Nov 2015 12:44 a.m. PST

It's well centred on the hull. I like it.

Martin Rapier12 Nov 2015 9:34 a.m. PST

As above, the grey as a little light, and that font should probably be outlined in white or yellow.

Brian Bronson12 Nov 2015 11:16 a.m. PST

What a bunch of smart a$$es we have here. I like it!

GROSSMAN12 Nov 2015 1:32 p.m. PST

The all caps was not used until after '44 so depending on what year you were……….

Jemima Fawr12 Nov 2015 7:58 p.m. PST

The font should be Fette Mittelschrift.

Well, now that my waiting period is over let me start by saying thank you for all the comical feedback over my deleted post. Truth is that I had a typo in the title and wanted to fix it since this is my first post on The Miniatures Page. Instead, I deleted the entire body, but the typo still remained while the original post was gone. Fortunately, a moderator fixed the title, but until the waiting period was over, all I could do is make another post or wait.

Here's the actual picture.

I am trying to paint my German vehicles to match what would be seen in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest or more specifically what was in and around Bergstein and Castle Hill (Hill 400) in early December.

I think Ambush Camouflage was still used at that time. Plus, it is fairly iconic so when I create different army lists it should work for many late war forces. That said, I am still not completely sure about striped design I painted. Part of me wants to widen the green to cover more of the Dunkelgelb as I find that I have too regular of width on both the Hetzer and Stug III. Especially since I am going for a part of the war that was fought in a heavily forested area.

Before I did, I wanted to get some feedback from others who have more expertise in World War II. After I get the main pattern down, I do plan on putting irregular-shaped "dots" but not quite corn chip pattern.

I also wanted ask about which color of lettering to go with and numbering designations (if any) to match the armor in/near Bergstien in early Decemeber 1944.

After being the first "comedian" to post below your deleted OP, let me take a crack at being the first with a few more serious thoughts to your camo questions:

The 3-color pattern was applied by several different methods under several different conditions so it was far from uniform. Most modelers go with a base of the dunkelgelb than about 25% coverage each by the green and brown. To vary the final pattern as you mentioned above, you could stop short of taking the stripe the whole way across the vehicle. That would break up the regularity of the stripes. A wash of brown or black and brown would take off the crisp sharp edge but that is a matter of taste that you alone should decide on. All in all, I like your work. Congrats and enjoy.

Welcome to TMP Clash957, interesting handle.
Kudos for your persistence in getting your post out!!

We really area bunch of gamers who make fun of each other on occasion, don't take it seriously.

Now, down to your post. Great looking vehicles! Nice work!
I do agree that a wash of brown to tone them down would be good. They look like they just came off the assembly line. Nothing wrong with that, but I prefer a used, battle worn look myself. A little rust one the tracks would be good too.

You've probably attended Enfilade, so you might have seen us there, the White Rock Gamers? We did Ligny and Waterloo.

Cheers,
Thomas

@wrgmr1

Don't worry about the jokes. I found them as funny as everyone else. It was just a bit frustrating having messed up my first post and having to wait to explain myself.

You are correct on the needing some sort of wash. I have been trying to decide between black or earthshade. I am leaning toward the earthshade since the model is lighter colored than say my American stuff. I experimented on one of my Pak 40s with the earthshade already and it came out a little muddier looking than I wanted. I tend to go with a fairly clean look. However, I think I can dial it back with some dry brushing and high lights if I want to.

I think I will put the dots on before I consider changing the pattern just to see what happens. Even though the stripes aren't exactly historical, I am getting to like the effect more now. Although, I think I might change up the pattern as my collection expands.

I think I was informed about Enfilade, but didn't manage to make it. I am quite new to miniature wargaming (but decades in tabletop rpgs) having only about 3 years in the hobby starting with Dust Warfare (technically the board game Mansions of Madness for painting). I just started pure historicals this year with Bolt Action back in April-May with the United States and started Germans coming up on 2 months ago. I have been flirting with the idea of starting Black Powder Napoleonics, but given we're entering the rainy season, it would probably be months before I can even prime. Not to mention I shutter to think about painting 100+ troops so soon after the 60 or so Germans I just got to past level I am will to field them.

I mainly game at Olympic Cards and Comics in Lacy (mostly Dust Battlefield but currently Dreadball) on Sundays. However, I sometimes head to Heroic Knight Games for Bolt Action. Less than I would like to since it is a bit of a drive for me for the Tuesday the night gaming. I am also starting to get in some games more locally at Game Matrix (again Dust Battlefield).

I do want to get involved more in historicals and will be keeping my eye out for conventions more.

Thanks for the input,
Shawn
