One of the main characteristics of Napoleonic organisation is the sitting up of headquarters for each campaign. The rear pivot of this moving Great Army manages essential operations either offensive ones (which is usual with Napoleon) or in case of forced retreat. On a continental theatre of operations this rear pivot was generally fortified and established five days' walk behind at most (around 100 km away), so that it could not be subject to enemy attack. It harboured hospitals, quartermaster's stores, as well as the armoury. Troops were detached to link the rear pivot to the front line.
