Van Dyck is a manufacturer of miniatures in 10/12 mm. They offer a superb ancient range with Romans and Gauls. Recently they launched a ww1 range with the German and Belgian armies for the start of the war and soon some Belgian officers for the chasseurs and the line should be released. Belgian Army

Those are great sculpts for that small scale! |

Any idea how they scale with other 10/12mm manufacturers ? As a rough guide are they compatible with Pendraken, with Kallistra or neither ? |

They are just a bit smaller in stature than Pendraken. They are noticibly smaller than Kallistra. By far, the Van Dyck are better detailled. I am basing my comparison with Van Dyck's late war Germans. These early war Germans seem to have thicker bases. I will use them all in my games. |

Hello Guys, I just noticed this topic, since I am the manufacturer of these miniatures I can ad that the officer pack for the Belgian line/chasseur infantry is now available. The release was this weekend at crisis in Antwerp, Belgium. Thanks for the great comments!!! |

Never heard of this range before, but very impressed by what I see here. Thanks Tango, your trawling of the web does throw up some gems! |

Although as mentioned above they are slightly smaller, are they compatible with Pendraken? |

Prehaps this clears out the scale some more:

Thanks for the picture Kris, your detail is amazing – I can even see buttons on the tunics, shoelaces and a trouser seam! |

Going by that picture they look to be a fair bit larger than Pendraken – which are about 11mm-11.5mm to the top of the head. Nice sculpts though and a bit more detailed than Kallistra I'd say – which may be a bit larger still. The problem with high detail at this size and in this period is that it can be a bit pointless painting the detail that isn't going to be seen on the tabletop. Much though I love detailed figures I don't even paint all the detail available on Pendraken WW1 for my own troops. I prefer a fairly basic paint job with some highlights to offset the rather drab uniforms. That way I can get reasonable looking armies on the table in a sensible amount of time. |

GildasFacit I have no problem with any comments on my figures but I have to ask, what is the comment here? I'm making them with to much detail, are less detailed figures better looking on a gaming table? Even with the most basic paint job, a wash and some highlighting the rich detail will help to make them very recognisable, even in this small scale. Anyway, this problem sounds more like a compliment, so hats off and thank you very much! |

Yes Kris, it was certainly a compliment on the sculpting and manufacture of the figures …. … but …. I still make the point that high detail on figures from this period will be very unlikely to be seen by anyone using them on a wargames table. In more colourful periods the detail may well make a difference to the army on the table but not in WW1 IMHO. Even saying that, if they were small enough to be compatible with my Pendraken Belgians, I'd be buying some AND probably trying to max the visibility of the detail. I CAN do detailed work in 10mm it is just that I made myself not do it after the first few WW1 I painted, as it just didn't show once the troops were based and on the table. |

For the Belgians I think this could still be called colourful:
